I can't believe this is the same exact channel that gives us Keith Olbermann

Imus called women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos"

On the April 4 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, which is comprised of eight African-American and two white players, as "nappy-headed hos" immediately after the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, called the team "hard-core hos." Later, former Imus sports announcer Sid Rosenberg, who was filling in for sportscaster Chris Carlin, said: "The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors."

McGuirk referred to the NCAA women's basketball championship game between Rutgers and Tennessee as a "Spike Lee thing," adding, "The Jigaboos vs. The Wannabees -- that movie that he had." McGuirk was presumably referring to Lee's 1988 film, School Daze (Sony Pictures), though co-host Charles McCord misidentified it as "Do the Right Thing" (Criterion, June 1989).

Check the above link if you have the stomach to read the entire conversation. Damnit, I thought this kinda of crap wasn't getting on Mainstream News. I'd expect these comments from Rush Limbaugh but who am I kidding

8. Imus is an elitist! and arrogant.....
I can't say I totally hate him but he's about as biased as they come. We turn him on in the mornings before WJ for something to watch and truthfully, to watch the crawler to see what's gone on in the world while we slept. I don't know why we do this really....I should just turn on my lap top instead and read what's REALLY happening.

I didn't happen to hear these remarks, but being an old P.E. teacher I am saddened.

16. The difference between Spike Lee's movie having that musical vignette
and Anus saying it is that it was used it in context of the whole movie.

Anus said it as a intentional derrogatory, racist comment meant to demean Rutgers' Women's Basketball team. There is no excuse for the word "ho" --even without qualifiers-- to go to air on any mainstream news/sports organization. The term is derrogatory, demeaning and sexist.

Perhaps his sponsors need to be targeted with an angry mail campaign.

21. Charles Gibson actually reported this last night on the ABC eve news.
However, as for NBC, I understand that Tim Russert was once again on Imus. No surprise there. You would think that Tim with his phoney baloney high falutin' credentials in washingtonworld would stay away from Imus like the plague now, but it appears that the msnbc tactic will be to ignore and sweep it under the rug. As long as Imus brings in the bucks, he can say and do whatever he pleases.

Every time we reach a new low, I can't imagine it getting any lower.

Well, I USED to not imagine it--now I'm shocked at how very rarely I'm shocked. And sadly, this didn't even shock me all that much.

44. The Corporate Media is just ASKING to get clamped down upon now!
By actually promoting folks like these, Coulter, Savage, etc. having air time with the spew of their venom to "distract" us.

These sorts of things will just be one more in the long laundry list of why we need to rewrite corporate law when it comes to corporate charters, laws MAKING sure that there can be no more judicial activism of "corporate free speech" and "corporate personhood" so that we can regulate crap like this.

The media at one time put forth their own standards association to rate movies, etc. to avoid the government doing it for them. They seem to be incapable of even that any more now. The only thing they and their paid for government partners seem to care about is how much skin porn their kids watch or hear about, not the actual hate, violence and other forms of pornography that fill our airwaves today.

Vivian Stringer is such a class act! I just wish Iowa still had her as their coach! She's had to go through a lot of tough times when in the tournament, including her husband dying before one final four and her kid getting very sick for an earlier one. It's really sad that someone like Imus has to find a way to ruin yet another final four for her! What a jerk!

45. I support Imus
Turn him off if you don't like it. That will get the attention of his sponsors.

Its past time that we stop punishing people for dumb things they say, especially since saying dumb things is one of the most important ways that people keep their careers going. Very unfortunate.

Had Al Sharpton made these comments about the Rutgers team, I would have fallen out of my seat laughing. But coming from Imus, well it seems very inappropriate. Just like the rest of his show. The difference is that the other dumb comments are often hilarious. But this is one of those areas where a lot of us are sensitive. That's the reason for the uproar.

Ask yourself this: if Carlos Mencia had said it, would you be upset or would you laugh?

49. I didn't hear how Imus said this, but...
that's part of my problem. If I actually need to hear how he said "Hos" to decide if his comments were acceptable, then this whole mess has gone too far. How can we police someone's attempt at humor?

I don't find Mencia funny either. But there are a lot of hispanic people (who he makes a living making fun of) who swear by him. But he can say that stuff because he is one of them.

What's clear to me is that Imus, like Mencia, was trying to be funny.

51. My all-time favorite Imus joke
In the days following the election of 2000, a very distressed Florida man called in to whine to Imus. It seems he had planned to use his van to ferry Bush supporters to the polls. But he heard on the radio that Gore had already won. So he gave up his efforts and went home. And wouldn't you know, if he had kept going, Bush would have won! Oh no!

So Imus tells him, in a calm voice:

"OK.. OK... That's just terrible. Just awful. OK here's what I want you to do, ok? I want you to set yourself...

And your trailer...

On fire."

That was the funniest shit I have ever heard in my life. Just friggin FUNNY. And let me tell you, that is a ridiculous sterotype and its a just plain awful thing to say. But it was funny as shit.
