5. I thought about the "joke" for many minutes -

Here is why it is supposed to be funny: If one spends $7 on a pen, the pen becomes very valuable to them, so they keep an eye on it (not losing it, like they would a cheap bic pen that costs 50 cents). WHY this is amusing escapes me, however. But I chuckled at the fact that she thinks a $7 pen would be such a valued item. I mean, it is not a Mont Blanc or anything - but $7 is two or three happy meals for her, hence VERY pricey and valuable. It is like saying she bought a blouse at Target, and took great care with it because it did not come fromt the Dollar store.
