"The Fear is Gone" Voices from Iran
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 01:11 PM by twitomy
"I live in the dorms at Tehran University. I was asleep when Basij militiamen entered my room early Monday morning, demolished everything and started beating us. A man with a long beard broke my notebook and said: "It is destroyed, this book that you were using against Islam and Ahmadinejad."

Interesting read. I know many here say we should butt out, however I really think Obama should do more for "Hope and Change" in Iran, as does this student...

1. nope - stay out.
dissident leaders have told us for years to stay out. Whatever we do will backfire on us.
plus we have no money for another adventure, nor an army in case we really fuck it up.
Nope- stay out.

2. For the US to do much overtly would be counter productive.

3. Just heard someone on TV

A professor from an American University saying " It's no problem in Iran, the election was fair - Tehran is just the problem. The votes were counted fairly and they had plenty of time to count the votes."

 What's that about???

I believe I was watching CNN and the interviewer was doing her best to point out the opposite view from the news coming into CNN but he said, "All that is wrong."

4. Define "doing more".
Any overt public move of support for the reformists specifically would instantly undermine them... frankly, the best possible thing he can do for them is whatever it takes to ensure that Khamenei isn't taken seriously when he tries to blame the protests on western incitement instead of a mass domestic movement.

5. It is easy
Just ask yourself if the Iranians had taken over OUR streets when the election was stolen from Gore in 2000.
How would THAT have been received?

6. I have confidence in the Iranian people.
They seem able to handle this without our interference. I can't think of anything ou government could do that wouldn't undermine them.
