PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday demanded that the state Legislature send approved budget bills to her and threatened to sue. Republican legislators refused and one said the situation "raises the specter of a government shutdown."
Brewer wants Senate President Bob Burns, R-Peoria, to send her the bills approved on June 4 to implement a Republican legislative budget plan that she has criticized.
"I will not allow the president to hold the entire state hostage by holding all of the budget bills," Brewer said earlier at a news conference. "Send me those bills so we can move to the next step in the budget process."
The Republican governor, however, acknowledged Monday that she "probably wouldn't sign" those bills.
Because of a possible veto, Burns and House Speaker Kirk Adams said they won't transmit the bills because they want the bills as the basis for a compromise with Brewer. If the bills are vetoed, lawmakers risk losing months of work, they said.
