My President Called Me a Faggot Today.
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 11:16 PM by pepperbear
I woke up this morning, turned on the news and I couldn't believe my ears.

My president, through the DOJ, called me a faggot today.

He told me my relationship doesn't matter.

He told me to put on my assless chaps and get back on the float.

He told me that Rick Santorum was right.

He told me it was about sex and nothing more.

He told me that he has forgotten what it's like to experience discrimination.

He told the bully it was OK to beat up on the gay kid.

He sided with the Westboro Baptist Church.

He said it was OK to keep me from my loved one's side.

He said get back to planning the weddings.

He told me I was an expense the government couldn't afford.

He vindicated Carrie Prejean.

He allowed the DOJ to use language one would expect from Mike Huckabee.

He is silent now when his voice matters most.

I defended Obama over gay rights. I was beaming when he went on Ellen. I figured there was a good reason for his actions on the DADT challenge. I tried to convince myself it was politics and nothing more. Well this is a mystery I will never be able to solve.

Why is my president calling me a faggot?

Be warned. I'm really not in the mood for apologists right now.

no this doesn't clarify anything. when obama says "hey, I didn't read that brief and it doesn't reflect WH views.", then we can talk. Obama has made no public statement on this.

8. And with all due respect to you, I seriously doubt
that Obama has read the brief. The DOJ is in charge of bring things before the court. It's even possible that Holder hasn't read it..if enough noise is made, I'm sure it will get attention from the people it should.

11. Obama sets policy, and doesn't have to micromanage to be held
responsible.

Lawyers have to discuss and plan their strategies and arguments in advance, especially when there are national policy implications to the arguments they use. So this brief was not written out of the blue. The DoJ knew about it up to the highest levels, and they certainly know what Obama wants and doesn't want regarding the representation of LGBT rights.

The Justice Department is supposed to be non-partisan. That is a principle that the Bush Administration's Justice Department flagrantly violated every day.

9. Who originally hired him means little.
A lawyer on in the DoJ has to clear their arguments in advance so that they aren't making new policy without approval. He would have discussed this case with his department and certainly with his boss. They would have known what defense he was using, if not the exact language.

Regardless of who he used to work for, he now works for the Obama administration, Appointed by the Obama Administration to work on this case. He speaks for the Obama administration. If his language does not represent the Obama administration then we should expect Attorney General Eric Holder to come out and say so, and declare this guy some kind of unsupervised loose cannon.

What are the odds that is going to happen?

2. Sorry
Many of us are disappointed in some of the things Obama is doing.

But as far as gay rights, you can't stop the momentum of public opinion. If California held prop 8 in 2012 the results would be totally different than in 2008. Civil unions were considered radical in the 90s, now they are so mainstream that almost all democrats and many republicans support them.

So sorry. But no matter what happens the momentum towards gay rights won't be stopped by anyone.

45. Well said...
This is why things like DOMA and DADT were passed in the first place. To PROTECT GLBT rights. Without DOA, we very well might have a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage by now. Without DADT, commanding military officers would still have the right to demand answers to questions about sexual orientation, and those who did no lie about it would be given dishonorable discharges.

The public opinion is evolving, and, as unfair as it absolutely is, DOMA and DADT were necessary in their time.

162. If you don't think
that public opinion in the med 90s was sufficient to support a Constitutional Amendment, then you need to look at it a little harder.

With the Massachusetts example showing the way, NOW it may be safer to repeal DOMA. It was, however, an important and necessary compromise at the time. If you would rather have taken the chance of an Amendment, I guess that is your business.

Public opinion was then, and still is the main force in this country. The Congress was very much Republican, and once past the Congress, and sent to the states, public opinion WOULD HAVE BEEN SUFFICIENT TO PASS AN AMENDMENT. Have you SEEN what the vote has been in the states when it was on the ballot?

I'm sure that is not what you would like to have happened!

160. completely disagree
you think that if they could have amended the constitution, they wouldn't just have done so, law or no law? It is nearly impossible to amend the constitution. Signing DOMA was unnecessary and the fact that Bill Clinton gets a pass for this is annoying.

Do you think Plessy v. Ferguson was "necessary in its time?"

140. As much as I loathe what he said, I'm glad he brought it out in the open.
Politicians have been hiding behind the "morality" bullshit for years.

The reason they deny civil rights to gay people is the same reason they kept slavery going. It's all about the money.

I wonder...If the government can move away from the fundy religious crap, and acknowledge that money is the real reason behind the oppression, will it be easier to strike it down as unconstitutional?

I'd love to believe there's a method to the madness here...It's all so sickening.

He told me in all seriousness that we can't allow gay people to marry because then two best friends who were both men would get married just to get tax breaks. I pointed out that I had plenty of female friends, as did every other guy I knew, and NONE of us were married for tax breaks. He didn't seem to get it.

Then again, he also drove around in a 1988 Mustang with Rush Limpballs blaring from the radio :puke:

Honestly, does protest accomplish anything? As far as I can tell, it's nothing more than a way for a lot of people to vent.

If you want change, you have to disrupt. No one will give you rights, friends. You have to take them. even if it means being dragged off in zippercuffs for "public disturbance" or "loitering"

DU'ers would be excited that Obama let the DOJ do their job without interferance from Executive Branch...as it was supposed to be instead of what we saw for the last 8 years. DOJ is NOT representative of what your President feels. Making that leap is erroneous. I truly am so sorry you are hurt. I didn't realize the bigot W Scott Simpson, the Mormon Bush holdover filed anti-gay DOMA brief. There is an underhanded concerted effort to undermine equality and it's not at the hands of your President.

48. Well, here's a start: Openly criticize those who do the assless chaps on floats thing.
Openly criticize those who don't take partnership issues seriously.

Wait, I did that - especially the "pride" bullshit that IN FACT DOES WHITTLE DOWN ANY STRENGTH - back in 2005 and got flamed (plus a couple PMs from supporters who were too damn scared to post because of the BULLSHIT mob mentality... so don't tell me I haven't been discriminated against either.)

If anybody wants to talk about REAL gay issues, go to gay.com -- they allow a far greater range of debate, without the infantile mob mindset here.

I'm not in the mood for anger based on vain inference either (For one thing, tell me where president Obama called us all "faggots".)

Here is a positive article about Pride on the front page.

Why We Need To Celebrate Pride

I smile and introduce myself as Michael and he says his name is Randy. Randy has a southern accent and tells me he is from a small town in Georgia. I asked who he came with and he said he made the long drive himself. He saves a lot of his money to afford this trip each year.

He is not "out" at home because his town is not accepting of the gay community. He doesn't even know another gay person within the small population of his town. His mother passed away when he was young and his father is battling his third round of cancer. His father, who knows he is gay, needs someone to take care of him and Randy is all he has. He has placed his life on hold to care for his father. He said, "It was the right thing to do."

This event each year is his chance to be with other gay men and see them having fun, in loving relationships and spending time with friends. He gets to be proud he is gay. He gets to be out for a whole day and celebrate who he is. <<

That is such a beautiful thing and every time one of my brothers and sisters of the LGBT communities mums or dads say something like that it always makes me so proud and thankful for such wonderful people in the world! My own mother is good with LGBT rights, but she's one of those 'marriage should be between a man and woman' and that being gay is a 'choice' types which surprised the hell out of me when she said that (also saddened me too).

Thank you for the pick me up today! Your son is very very lucky!

141. going by your view of this brief
are you of the view that a good number of states in the us is now incest states, and some others are pedophile states?

Thats what the brief is about after all, the difference in marriage laws and how some are valid in some states but not others. Some states allow 16 year olds to marry(with some restrictions/permissions), others allow first cousins to marry, a fair number bans one or both of the above.

So i personally don't see any comparing between gays and incest/pedophilia, what i see is the defense pointing out a number of cases that strengthens their case which they are duty bound to defend to the best of their ability even if they disagree with their own stance.

153. Gladly, bigmouth:
Obama invoked incest and people marrying children.

The courts have followed this principle, moreover, in relation to the validity of marriages performed in other States. Both the First and Second Restatements of Conflict of Laws recognize that State courts may refuse to give effect to a marriage, or to certain incidents of a marriage, that contravene the forum State's policy. See Restatement (First) of Conflict of Laws § 134; Restatement (Second) of Conflict of Laws § 284.5 And the courts have widely held that certain marriages performed elsewhere need not be given effect, because they conflicted with the public policy of the forum. See, e.g., Catalano v. Catalano, 170 A.2d 726, 728-29 (Conn. 1961) (marriage of uncle to niece, "though valid in Italy under its laws, was not valid in Connecticut because it contravened the public policy of th state"); Wilkins v. Zelichowski, 140 A.2d 65, 67-68 (N.J. 1958) (marriage of 16-year-old female held invalid in New Jersey, regardless of validity in Indiana where performed, in light of N.J. policy reflected in statute permitting adult female to secure annulment of her underage marriage); In re Mortenson's Estate, 316 P.2d 1106 (Ariz. 1957) (marriage of first cousins held invalid in Arizona, though lawfully performed in New Mexico, given Arizona policy reflected in statute declaring such marriages "prohibited and void").

Then in the next paragraph, they argue that the incest and child rape cases therefore make DOMA constitutional:

The fact that States have long had the authority to decline to give effect to marriages performed in other States based on the forum State's public policy strongly supports the constitutionality of Congress's exercise of its authority in DOMA.

155. Obama invoked?
In the first place, starting your post with such an idiotic and uninformed statement puts you squarely in the class of irrational. Barack Obama had NO input into, nor power of approval over, this brief.

As far as the rest of this, the brief is merely citing examples of other marriages that are legal in some jurisdictions, but not in others. That is the only thing that is being claimed in common between those cases and same-sex marriages. I'm sorry if you can't even comprehend that simple level of legal reasoning, but maybe you should try before you make such a fool of yourself again.

Hyperventilate all you want if it makes you feel better, but it won't change the facts.

But a simple understanding of government would tell you that the President and the DOJ are NOT related. The president had nothing to do with this briefing. For all we know, Obama could come out Monday and completely denounce this brief. It doesn't mean legally he can do anything about it. Congress has to act first.

173. Actually, eating a gay baby might endear him to the fundamentalists
whose approval he seems to want more than anything else in the world.

He could tell them that he ate the baby in order to keep it from someday doing sinful homo things.

As to my "ridiculous" rants, thank goodness I have friends here that don't feel that way and aren't fair-weathered "friends".

118. No apologies from here, no apologies to friends that never quite understood...
what a politician talking/appealing to 'the focused base', campaigning from the center, then running round doing whatever it takes looks like; forget 'sounds like', but looks like as it interfaces with certain, entrenched, and specific wheels that have been grinding so fucking slowly now for centuries; I'm sorry but is it right, is it wrong?

It is wrong it is not right. It is also sometimes the way it is, and so no per se apologies for understanding little the import of the images and symbols we seem to all put so much faith into

134. Obama is disappointing......
Whether it is this, his failure to act on DADT either by engaging with Congress to repeal or issuing an executive order to stop enforcement while the policy is reviewed, Obama gets a ZERO on GLBT issues. His campaign rhetoric got the community behind him but once again we are fools for believing a politician. For now my checkbook is sealed tightly to any Democratic plea for money. Once the Democrats demonstrate by ACTION they are worthy of my support will I consider giving them so much as a penny of my GAY money.

142. Yeah - he is. We need a REAL SUPERHERO !!!!
Superman would have already used his x-ray vision to find gold deposits that could actually bring wealth to this country.

Aquaman would have trained the ocean fish to swim against the tidal current generators surrounding our coasts to provide energy for all cities w/in 300 miles of the coast.

Spiderman would have already taken out all the Corporatist.

Batman as President would have eradicated all underworld parasites (Cheney et al) crime.

Wonderwoman would have a 'wardrobe malfunction' that distracts all hetero males and allow for females to spend a few months getting the world back in order.

Damn... Obama seems pretty pathetic.

163. Yeah, Because You Have to Have Superpowers to Make a Public Statement Against DOMA or DADT
Or the recent gains in Iowa and New England. Or the setback in California.

Obama doesn't need superpowers. He needs balls. Have any to lend him? Or are you too busy using yours to kick people when they're down?

169. I'm gay, but I refuse to "queen out" over this minor stuff.
Obama hasn't done anything that's alarming to me. He has to be a President of all the people, and DOMA is current federal law, which he as the executive has no choice but to defend, until it is repealed.

When the draft comes for a large war, being gay will not get you out of it. When the war ends, the witchhunts will begin again. That is how America operates.
