More on the death of Dr Tiller. He was truly PRO-choice ALL Churches on High alert today
Dr. Tiller was truly PRO-CHOICE, the woman's choice, not the Senator's choice or the doctor's choice or the church's choice. He will be dearly missed, because there are not enough doctors trained to provide the needs of women for abortion services.

reading the guest book for his obit... makes me sad and angry

1. so many times he helped women...reading his guest book
May 31, 2009
Dr.Tiller was a hero, every day he risked his life to give women the option to choose. Dr. Tiller came to my aid after being gang raped in 2000. I send my condolences to the family, friends, and hundreds of women for whom this loss is unimaginable.

2. I am afraid to say they didn't take these Neo Christian zeolots
for the danger they truely are. They are home grown "Terrorist" and it is time to treat them as such. The DOJ and Homeland security MUST begin the dismantling, prosecution and eventually convictions of these Terrorists. This is not free speech anymore these Terrorist pose a risk to the general public.

3. more posts from his guest book
May 31, 2009
I attended sunday school (and church) in the 90's at that church with George and Jeane. George was one of the most thoughtful men I have ever known. I was pregnant and we had our first child while attending there. I recall on one occasion he made a special effort to tell us that having your first child was amazing because you go into the hospital as 2 people and come out as 3 and a family. I learned later that his observation was oh so true. I am sure that the church family will be there for you. I wish I were there. My prayers are with you.

4. does this sound like a "baby killer" god I hate the RW fanatics
May 31, 2009
As a student 12 years ago, Dr. Tiller took time out of this schedule to further my education in anatomy but most important in spirituality and medicine. He once told me that no one is strong enough to kill a soul and that all women and unborn babies have the choice to life (therefore the reason for so many miscarriages). He believed in safety for the body and acknowledgement of the soul and impressed this in me as he encouraged me to attend medical school. Dr. Tiller was instrumental in providing sound suggestions and feedback as I worked on a phd in healing birth trauma. It is because of his utmost dedication to the soul and spirit of medicine that I go through medical school, confident in my beliefs and morals.

To the family, friends & staff of Dr. Tiller: your husband, father and friend instilled a profound spirituality and inherent compassion within my soul for the suffering and needs of others. We have no idea how many lives he made better or forever altered but there is no doubt the depth of the impact his presence had upon us. There are no words of comfort I can express that will lessen your grief. But the unsaid words of love will carry you, even in this most desperate time. With the greatest respect for the man who stood up for his beliefs no matter what, I honor you.

32. Doug and Tracy's story
June 02, 2009
In March of 2001 my wife and I were devastated to learn that the child we had tried so hard to have had a severe case of hydrocephalus, water on the brain. Each specialist we spoke to provided a more dire prognosis, describing a life that would only be possible if supported by machines and letting God take this child naturally after birth might not be our choice as the state would then step in and require it be kept on life support. We had no desire to bring a child into the world only to watch it suffer. We had never previously heard of Dr. Tiller but were referred to him many times throughout this ordeal. When we arrived at his clinic the care and compassion that were provided were wonderful and his efforts helped to ease the pain of a terrible situation. When my wife encountered more difficulties during the process that made it more dangerous he was there every step of the way even taking time away from his family in the evenings. Today we have two healthy boys and thank God every day for the opportunity to spend time with them and watch them grow and thank Dr. Tiller for that opportunity. The news of his murder was devastating, those who have been touched by him know of the person that the world has lost and can rest assured that God is watching over he and his family now.

9. Guards in churches? Will the GOP victim complex never end!?
Where were they before?

Why would the churches need guards? They were never needed before, they are not needed now, nor will they be needed in the future.

The churches have never been under threat. Dennis Rader, the BTK strangler, worked in a church.

The GOP denial is astounding.

10. I made it through three pages of the guest book before I had to stop.
I'm still so angry about this. I hope the DOJ goes through Roeder's records with a fine-toothed comb and haul all of his crazy ass friends in for questioning. Their threats and violence have been allowed to go on for far too long. These fuckers are not allowed to do whatever they want. Fucking culture of life indeed. They're all hateful, misogynist bastards, and they deserve no sympathy or understanding.

And I seriously don't ever want to hear another politician say that we need to find common ground with these zealots. I don't need to find common ground with people who would happily watch me die rather than allowing me access to proper medical care. I don't need their book, their god, or their beliefs. Fuck them all.

I click on all the Dr. Tiller threads, and though I rarely post, I appreciate them. The threads featuring the personal stories are heart-wrenching, but necessary. I think it's important that the stories are brought to light. I can only hope that exposure to the truth helps to lessen the influence of the right wing lies.

15. another act of kindness and gentle care
May 31, 2009
As a labor & delivery nurse at Wesley, I once cared for a woman who had undergone an abortion, only to have her diabetes exacerbate her condition. Dr Tiller came to the hospital to provide skilled care his patient. He was a kind, warm & caring individual. I am appalled at his murder in my home city. May his family have peace & fortitude to carry on after his untimely death.

I had the honor to meet Dr. Tiller when I was a scared pregnant teenager. He encouraged me to place my baby for adoption. I am forever grateful to him, as I was able to give her to a loving family. I will always remember Dr. Tiller as a wonderful man. May he rest in peace. May his family find comfort in their wonderful memories of him and in Jesus Christ.

13. I read in the KC Star today about Dr. Tiller
He had showed photos of all the abnormal and deformed fetuses that he had aborted, but the religious nut in the article said that he only seen babies in the photos, who could have led healthy and productive lives. The religious nuts are delusional.

24. These people simply have no idea
Edited on Sun Jun-07-09 02:55 PM by HockeyMom
the havoc that mother nature can wreck. These people think in terms of Downs and ceberal palsy. That is NOTHING in comparison. These unfortunate human beings will require lifelong hospitalizations, surgeries, and round the clock care just to assure their survival. Who will do this? I worked with this population. At least the ones who lived long enough to make it to adulthood. They were given up for adoption by their parents who could not afford to take care of them, emotionally and financially, for the rest of their lives. What happened to them was they became wards of the state to the tune of millions and millions of dollars for their care. Nobody wanted to adopt a child who was, to put it bluntly, going to be a vegetable for the rest of their life. Again, I am not talking about walking, talking, smiling, DOWNS people. Sorry, no comparison.

These religious nuts need to take off their blinders. Go visit these hospital wards and group homes and actually SEE what they are talking about.

These poor unfortunate human beings will NEVER become productive member of society.

June 02, 2009
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and staff of Dr Tiller. May God help this family find peace and happiness in the future. My political views are very much prolife as I believe was Doctor Tillers. There were many many times thru his care and compasion for doing the right things is evident by the successful lifes of the women and children he saved.Yes children he saved! My 16 year old son was delivered by Doctor Tiller and delivered personnally to a neonatal unit for his care in his personal vehicle. I will forever be grateful for that. Every decisions was based on the health and well being for all involved. Be with God Doctor Tiller. Doctor Tiller was a faithful servent whose career was centered around his relationship with professionals and people of faith in God Almighty to lead in lifes daily decsions toward those who seeked the clinics help. I can only imagine the horror of each situation involving these types of surgery should this responsibility had been given to someone who wasn't living with the faith he showed in serving God to lead him through his work.
Doctor Tiller was a man of God who chose to follow his calling with out the selfishness and lack of faith shown by so many others.

Doctor Tiller will be missed by all who knew him and got the opportunity to make their decsions based on the education and advise given.

Again Thank you to Doc, his staff and his family for walking through the terror and horrors faced by you all in fullfilling the calling to service by God to serve in this area of medical and spiritual work.

30. this one breaks my heart
June 02, 2009

My husband and I were horrified by the news of Dr. Tiller's death. Eighteen months ago, we came away from a personal tragedy, the death of our first child, feeling as though we'd just gained new family - that of the staff at Women's Health Care Services and Dr. George Tiller.

Dr. Tiller's compassion provided us with relief from what was a horrible situation - a massive fetal stroke which blocked blood flow to both the right and left hemisphere our baby (Matthew)'s brain, causing existing brain tissue to slowly disappear before our eyes over the course of 2-3 months. We were advised by one of the leading 'miracle workers' at the hospital that our baby would not have any motor control or sensory perception. He explained that the brain stem was in tact and the autonomic functions of this section of the brain were the only thing technically keeping him 'alive'. He also explained that upon birth, the individual moral choice of attending medical professionals could result in Matthew being either resuscitated or put on life support (against our wishes). For this reason, even he, one of the 'miracle workers', advised us (as had each of the other doctors we'd seen), that put in the same circumstance, he would be going to Kansas to ensure a moral and peaceful end to the matter.

Upon our arrival in Wichita, we discovered that we were one of four couples, coming from far-flung places including Canada, New York, Texas and Iowa - all whose babies had suffered massive hemorraging in their brains. Each of us was forced, at great personal expense, to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to obtain ethical medical treatment. Dr. Tiller and his staff looked after not only our physical / medical needs, but they had obviously given significant consideration to our emotional needs as well.

The death of Dr. George Tiller is a travesty for this country. I have no doubt that thousands of women - and men - grieved the news on Sunday, that someone of such great compassion, who had sacrificed so much for the good of others and touched their lives so personally, could be brought to such tragic end. My husband and I, now 36 weeks pregnant with our second child, are devastated.

We send our thoughts, love and embrace to all of the incredible staff at Women's Health Care Services, and to Dr. Tiller's family. May God bless him for his compassion and self sacrifice.

Our sincere condolensces to all.

18. Jenny's story
May 31, 2009
I had an abortion that Dr. Tiller performed 15 years ago. Him and his staff were so nice and proffesional and understanding. My heart breaks right now for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a good person and is in my prayers. This is a horrible tradgedy for a man who stuck to his beliefs all these years, held to the law, and provided excellent care to his patients. My thoughts are with his widow and family. I'm so sorry this has happened to you. Please know that he helped many women who were confused, scared and had no other options. Please know that Mr. Tiller was a good man who stuck to his beliefs and it should be respected. Thank you Dr. Tiller for helping me and others. You will be missed.

My daughter was once a patient of Dr. Tiller's. Due to an unavoidable delay in diagnosing the problem with her pregnancy, she was left with almost no one to turn to for help, and Dr. Tiller was there for her. He and his staff showed the compassion that so many others do not. That someone would take this wonderful man's life is tragic. The women Dr. Tiller helped, and those who are yet to come, have lost more than anyone can understand.

21. wow, this one is incredible
May 31, 2009
I am so saddened by this news, and by the death of a man I have always admired and respected. When I was a young woman, Dr. Tiller was my family's GP, at the time he found my sister's ovarian cancer and told her to find a gynecologist, at the time he was certified as only a General Practioner and he felt she would be better served by a specialist. She did go to a "specialist" but this doctor was nowhere near as concerned with women's health as Dr. George, and for three years he dismissed her complaints and told her nothing was wrong. After she went through years of painful surgeries and chemotherapy, she went back just to visit Dr. George, she told him the only thing she had ever wanted was to be a mom, he smiled at her and told her, you go to this attorney and talk to him, I may be able to help you. She only wieghed 65 lbs. and was very sick when he told her this. It gave her hope when everyone else had turned her down for adoption. She started working out with 2 lb weights, contacted the attorney and 5 months later she had my niece in her arms, Dr. George arranged the adoption.

Some time after that I had my last physical with Dr. George (we called him that by the way because in those days he said "Dr. Tiller was my dad"). He gave me the best most thorough exam I have ever been given by any doctor before or after, and then he asked me if we could just talk a bit. He wanted my opionion as a young woman about becoming an abortion provider. He was conflicted and yet we had both grown up in the 50's when women did not have the right to choose, and at the time I was working with abused and neglected children. I told him the stories of some of the kids I took care of, the children of women who had not chosen abortion but instead had given birth to their children and then beaten them or left them. Sometimes, I think we as a society forget that there are worse things than death.

My dad also went back to see Dr. George when he felt really ill, 3 other doctors could not find the tumor at the juncture of his esophagus and stomach but Dr. George did in just a few tests. You can just imagine how many looks he got from the women in all stages of pregnacy, and how funny it was when he crossed a picket line to get in to Dr. George's clinic, and shouted no I'm not the father of an aborted fetis, I'm going here to "see" my doctor. By that time Dr. George was practicing as an abortion provider, but he never said no to any of his former patients that needed to see him.

I think there just are not enough words to say what a hero means to a whole family, to my family it was Dr. George. He was a man who lived by his heart and by his faith and he stood courageously and defended what he believed in. I was honored to know him and my heart is saddened by the death of this American patriot.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife, children and grandchildren.

23. Amy's story
May 31, 2009
Dr. Tiller was the only Dr. in the country willing to put himself out there for women and their families day after day. He was there for those of us who had pregnancies where the babies had fatal diagnoses. Because of his clinic, my angel was able to go to heaven straight from my womb, not born into intolerable pain just to die. There are so many other women out there just like me who had to make this horrible choice. Check that, were ABLE to make this choice because of Dr. Tiller. God bless him and his family. Know that there are so many who are grateful to him and consider him a hero. He helped when no one else would.

After reciving the devasting news that your baby has numerous fetal abnormalities your life feels overwhelming and hopeless. I thank God everyday for Dr. Tiller and his staff for helping my family through that extermely difficult time.

Dr. Tiller was so intuitive and caring. He could see I still had doubt in my heart and would not perform my late-term abortion until I was sure this is what was best for our family. He set me up with other specialists to get second and third opinions until I could make an informed decision. I saw countless specialists prior to Dr. Tiller all of whom made insensitive comments that still hurt all these years later. Dr. Tiller was the only one who really listened to me and looked me in the eye and treated me like a person, not a statistic.

I admire Dr. T for his bravery and conviction but most of all his compassion for his patients.

I have been looking for her , and recently sent Dr, Tiller a letter to see if he could help me locate her,or suggestions in finding her.I am so so scared he was my last link in finding her.And now I will never get a answer to that letter. My wife and I found out that our baby had massive birth defects and we were refered to Dr.Tiller. Babies with the defects like ours usually suffered great physical head pain durring their short life with the degree of defects like our baby had ( he was on pain medication during his short life). Dr.Tiller and his staff eccouraged my wife and I to continue the pregnancy and also told us that God works miracles every day and we should pray for healing. They did not want to stop our pregnancy and so we had the baby who lived to be several weeks of age before he went to be with God. We to date thank Dr.Tiller and staff for encouraging us to continue the pregnancy because we got to spend valuable time with our little boy before he passed away. He (Dr.Tiller) did have a heart and did care about families. He was human. We are Christians and we thank God every day for his guidence through Dr.Tiller to allow us to have that short time to get to know our little boy. May God Bless the Tiller family.

My deepest sympathy to dr. tiller's family. I entered his clinic 1 1/2 years ago. I was devastated that I had to be there. I was told that "the md in Kansas would take good care of me". And that is when I met this gentle human being. Out of all the perinatal specialist I dealt with Dr. Tiller was the 1st and ONLY to let me cry on his shoulder. He treated me and my husband with great respect and compassion. He was truely a professional. May you rest in peace Dr. Tiller. If it wasn't for you I don't know what I would have done.

Dr. Tiller saved my life when dealing with the fatal diagnoses of our daughter. When we found out about our little angel and her fatal heart condition I didn't even want to live anymore. I was devastated to say the least. I knew I had to do something because my two boys needed their mother so we were referred to Dr. Tiller. Dr. Tiller was one of the most caring compassionate doctors I have ever met. He understood what we were going through and spent so much time talking with us and guiding us through our loss. He never judged us and knew how much we loved our baby girl and how we desperately wanted things to be different. Dr. Tiller helped us get through the most difficult and painful time in our life. I am grateful for all of his help and compassion. I think this is a tragedy and will be eternally grateful that I got my life back with the help of Dr. Tiller. We now have 6 beautiful children and our little angel in heaven watching over our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace and may peace come to his family.

36. 1587 entries I read them all
I think there were a couple I would have deleted, but it is not my paper

the overwhelming theme was he was more than an abortion doctor but a caring, compassionate, man concerned with the well being of every one involved.

38. The common thread through all these stories
Edited on Sun Jun-07-09 07:52 PM by HockeyMom
is that these were WANTED pregnancies that had gone terribly, terribly wrong. Unfortunately, in the majority of these cases, these deformites cannot be detected until later in pregnancy. No, they weren't "prom queens" who wanted to fit into their dresses.
