During his guest-hosting gig on Bill Bennett’s radio show this morning, RNC Chairman Michael Steele commented on the Wall Street Journal report that the Obama administration plans to appoint a “Special Master for Compensation” to ensure that companies receiving federal bailout funds are abiding by executive-pay guidelines. Echoing the common conservative criticism of the Obama administration’s use of so-called “czars,” Steele wondered aloud, “can the people appoint a czar to make sure these numb nuts don’t do what they’re doing?”

I thought that was the Unforgivable Sin for Republicans. And it didn't even have to be criticism that was all that harsh. If someone made the rather obvious statement that Bush was conducting himself like a Grade A Buffoon, the right wing howled with rage! Treason or worse to criticize the president during an overseas mission, it was. Fainting couch manufacturers had to put on an extra shift, and pearls suitable for clutching were synthesized at maximum production for all the Republicans overcome by the spectacle of American citizens criticizing the president while he was out of the country.
