Tell your Senators to Vote YES on S. 982
Today the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which would grant the Food and Drug Administration authority over tobacco products, was brought forward for consideration by the U.S. Senate. Please email your senators and ask them to support Senate Bill 982 and to oppose any weakening amendments.
S. 982 would finally end special protection for Big Tobacco by allowing the manufacturing, marketing and sale of tobacco products to be regulated.
Just last month, a three judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously upheld the decision of the District Court in 2006 that the tobacco companies had engaged in racketeering a decades long-scheme to deceive and defraud the American public.
District Court Judge Gladys Kessler wrote in her opinion that tobacco companies "have marketed and sold their lethal products with zeal, with deception, with a single-minded focus on their financial success, and without regard for the human tragedy or social costs that success exacted."
It is time for action. Please vote YES on S. 982 and please oppose any weakening amendments.
