Recommend if you oppose the ruling on proposition 8.
Many are angered by this decision.
Are we ever going to see legal gay marraige in California?
Recalls were threatened by this self-named "American Civil Responsibilities Union."
But did that affect the ruling?
Let's see if the other side can make a show of solidarity.
Each person who opposes the ruling can recommend this thread.
Can Democratic Underground outnumber the ACRU?
Anybody interested in finding out?

along with the spirit of the Declaration of Independence.

9th Amendment; "The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

14th Amendment; "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within it's jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Of course, they've thought this for a while over things like eight years of Bush, our insane health care system, whatever. This just sort of solidified it for them.

They keep asking me to explain why we do these things. No matter what I say, their answer is "But that doesn't make any sense."

The court said the Californians have a right, through the ballot box, to change their constitution.

"In a sense, petitioners' and the attorney general's complaint is that it is just too easy to amend the California Constitution through the initiative process. But it is not a proper function of this court to curtail that process; we are constitutionally bound to uphold it," the ruling said.


How long before the Mormons feel tempted to tell all of California's women that they must
be subservient!!!

And this is cute from one of the Prop 8 supporters . . .

"A lot of people just assume we're religious nuts. We're not. But we are Christians and we believe in the Bible," said George Popko, 22, a student at American River College in Sacramento, where the student government officially endorsed Proposition 8.

97. I am personally happy for those whose marriages remain intact. But that's not enough.
I do want to acknowledge a sigh of relief for the 18,000 couples whose marriages will remain intact, with the caveat, for now. The struggle continues, and until it is won, no marriage will be safe. Maybe not just gay marriages, either, as a disturbing precedent has been set.

Obviously, I'm upset at the upholding of Prop H8, but there is another issue that no one has raised here yet (at least not that I've seen).

There is a kind of "survivor's guilt" that is setting in on me. I've got my marriage, but so many other people don't and won't be able to. I'm beginning to feel guilty about that. I made it under the wire. Thousands upon thousands didn't. I feel like the guy who took the last lifeboat.

Also, those of us who are married are now freaks -- or, if the word "freaks" freaks you out, then we're curiosities. We're not normal. We will die out and same-sex marriage will die with us -- kind of like those old Shaker women who held out after they decided not to continue the sect. Just a bunch of old ladies huddled in a farmhouse in Maine, waiting for Shakerism to die with them.

Will there be a story some day in the LA Times: "Last California same-sex marriage ended by death of spouse."

There is a rally tonight in town. I'm not going. I don't trust myself to go. I might do something I regret.

136. I'm not as furious as some. Wait, hear me out.
When California voters put Prop 8 through, there was such rage and in fact blowback in many states that caused them to give gays more rights in their states. I think this will spur even more progress in other states and eventually, California will go back to giving gays their basic rights but during this backward time, they will help spur more rights in other states. So, while I'm mortified at California, I'm happy that they are actually spurring real progress for others. High irony, really. Sad irony, but irony nonetheless.

I am very sorry that the California gays have to suffer longer - that's not fair at all.

And yes, I rec'd this thread. I am for full rights for gays.

Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesUs Magazine The New York Times is reporting that American Idol's Kris Allen may have had a little help from AT&T, one of the Fox show's biggest corporate sponsors, in winning this year.

According to the Times, AT&T provided phones for free text-messaging services at two Allen parties in Arkansas on the night of the finals. Citing sources, The Times reports that AT&T reps showed party-goers how to "power text" -- cast 10 votes at the touch of a button -- which violates show rules.

Check out 20 unforgettable moments from the Idol finale

Power texts, according to the Times, "have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the shows toll-free phone lines."

No similar efforts appear to have been made to provide free texting services to Adam Lambert fans.

Angry Lambert supporters are now claiming in online chat boards that the competition's voting was rigged.

While Fox has yet to comment, AT&T issued the following statement: "In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested."
