A Memorial Day Remembrance

SNIP

Originally called Decoration Day, the Grand Army of the Republic Headquarters designated the 30th of May, 1868, as a day for “strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.”

SNIP

The original Decoration Day order prescribed no particular form or ceremony but called on “Posts and comrades in their own way arrange…fitting services and testimonials of respect.” I’d like to offer one such testimonial for one of my forebears who died in defense of his country during the Civil War. First, however, a brief family history.

1. thanks for the story
for $25, you can get the military record of a specific Civil War soldier, and for more, the pension record. Well worth the investment to find out about folks.

As the guy saying he figured the Arkansans fought for the Confederacy--depended on where they were from. An awful lot of folks in northwest Arkansas opted for Federal service--one legislator from the area refused to vote for secession, and there were many skirmishes, etc, where neighbors fought neighbors. Harrison was a town named for and founded by Union officers in 1870.
