So what do you do when you're an anti-spending, pro-secession conservative governor whose publicly-owned mansion needs $21 million in repairs to recover from fire damage?

Apparently, you do something like this (via diarist gsadamb ):

AUSTIN, Texas – While Gov. Rick Perry is criticizing Washington bailouts, state lawmakers are planning to use $11 million in federal stimulus money to help rebuild the badly burned Texas Governor's Mansion.

Approximately $10 million in state tax money will also be spent on a renovation, which is expected to cost about $20 million, officials said Thursday.

This, of course, is the same Rick Perry who, along with a handful of other Republican extremists, rejected stimulus money for jobless Texans, and recently said that Texas would consider seceding if the federal government didn't dramatically cut spending.

2. I can fault him for a lot, but why this?
It isn't "his" mansion - it is the Governor's mansion. The stimulus money will pay for materials and labor, helping to support a critical part of the economy. Because of the fire damage, it is work that needs to be done.

Of course, i gotta wonder -$21 million? For that, he could build a whole new Governor's mansion. Is the current one a historic landmark kind of place, or something?

4. Or building a $10 million homeless shelter
Which seems like a better stimulus idea and would have a longer term impact on society?

8. Yes, as a matter of fact it is a historic landmark
The mansion was built in the 1850s and every governor since 1856 has lived there. It was already being renovated when some shitheel set it on fire last June.

The fact that Rick Perry is a douchebag shouldn't enter into the equation.

7. The parts of the mansion that were restored should belong to the USA
And if Texas secedes, America should remove said parts as federal property.

Texas isn't going to secede.

The mansion is an historical landmark and has housed far more Democratic Governors than republican ones. The structure can be restored and quite possibly brought up to LEED standards.

10. I know that
After we had our own brush with secession (Québec), i don't think secessionist Texans have a clue what they're getting in to.
