The truth is dead. And we the people are screwed.
I just came upon a screamfest between Liz Cheney and Lawrence O'Donnell. Cheney was allowed to scream her lies all over LOD. Yesterday's apparent re-coronation of Cheney as someone important just confirms it. The GOP screams its lies louder than the Democrats - and are aided and abetted gleefully by the MSM. When Obama and Cheney are presented as providing equal value and equal veracity, we are in deep, deep shit.

2. Fairness Doctrine updated for today's world.
Mandatory media diversity.

Keep media ownership in check to prevent any one corporation from owning too much of a market.

Hold people accountable for what they say on the air.

We must face it: the media is largely responsible for this mess, and must be regulated better. When lies are allowed to stand, something is wrong.

6. Therein lies the root of many of our problems....
lack of free press. We simply have either propaganda via Faux or a place for anyone to spout their views, facts be damned. No journalists are involved in the process.

I just read in another thread that the repubs are working hard to justify torture.

After watching the debacle of Liz Cheney v. Larry O'Donnell on friggin Good Morning AmericI (I'm used to it on cable news' 24/7 cycle of infotainment), it's apparent their larger goal here is to COMPLETELY discredit Obama. Elections didn't even happen for these people...they're still in campaign mode and are trying to take him out with full-on swiftboating.

Will it work? Stranger things have happened...

11. Good Morning America...ugh. And what's scary is the high % of people who get their "news" from it
Deception can so easily become the accepted, consensus "reality."

15. Exactly, that IS so scary....
I am fortunate to work from home and I keep a little TV on in the background, muted, so I don't feel so alone. LOL.

I only get ABC. Hence me having a clue what happens on Good Morning America and The View. Low-information voters get their information from those shows, so I like to know what is being pushed for the day.

Anyone who lives in complete fear will buy into the Liz Cheney crap (she is REALLY vile...wow). But, I don't know. The majority did elect Obama, after all, and Palin tried the same thing....

I'm hoping Obama gets pissed off enough at their obvious undermining of his presidency that he will -- in a brilliant, apolitical way -- wipe that smirk off Cheney's face permanently and discredit him beyond all shadow of a doubt.

7. The corporate media is an enemy of democracy.
The power of propaganda is real.

We must strive to diversify ownership of the media.

12. One of the hallmarks of a fascist shift in a country is the mixture of
lies along with the truth and the truth then becomes lowered to an equal with something that isn't. Though there will be no doubt people that will dismiss you, you are correct. I'm incapable of trust right now and my votes seem to be defensive and never affirmative. There are safer more sane and educated places to live in the world. It's a tough situation.

14. Well stated. I think that the education factor is significant - has a country
with such resource and potential ever allowed itself to become so dumbed down? I have to believe that television is one of the most significant factors in this.

16. Most certainly.
Sometimes, it is even difficult to hold conversations with people you have known a long time concerning things that have gone on because they look at you as if you are from outer space. But what amazes me even more is how people have no recollection of the past, what they learned in school, or the lack of recognition that TV news itself has changed. I'm depressed but I'm fighting it so I can still carry on and carry the fight when I have to.

17. I've accepted the reality that....
Edited on Fri May-22-09 06:59 AM by OneGrassRoot
there is a significant percentage of citizens in the US who want a vastly different world than I do.

Completely different worldviews.

Cheney, Limbaugh, Palin appeal to them. They don't CARE if heinous things happen to people of color -- be it Katrina or Iraq. I've been told repeatedly throughout my life that "we should just nuke the whole Middle East and make it a parking lot."

I shit you not.

Beyond those people are the ones who remain silent and have NO opinion beyond what MSM shoves down their collective throat.

I don't want to live in their world.

There is no reconciliation...so it leads to a sense of hopelessness. Absolutely.

18. I think many of us here at DU don't really realize how plugged in we are, comparatively.
Some of the possibilities discussed here are so big that most people can't - or won't - get their heads around it. Most people like their life nice and orderly, and in bite sized pieces (like the junk food so many Americans are addicted to). A shame, all of this we are discussing. I also don't know how to deal with it all - I got laid off last year after 25 years in corporate America, and at 53, don't really know exactly what my next steps should be. Life certainly is interesting right now, in many dimensions!

20. Our hyper-awareness can lead to a sense of hopelessness....
I also feel sometimes that ignorance is bliss.

It's hard to get a handle around what MOST people are thinking and feeling nowadays. I live in the Raleigh area, too, but in a very red area (more toward Fuquay), so Palin signs were prominent around here. Needless to say, I stay rather depressed...lol.

Best of luck to you as you find your way and your new path....

25. We are in North Raleigh. Blue speck in a sea of red in our neighborhood!
I keep sane by gardening - been growing on a large scale (for 25 years)/selling on a small scale (for 12 years) heirloom tomato plants, a great hobby....thinking of working it more into my financial future.
