1. Interesting . . . Dems get McCain and 'Licans get Lieberman?
Can't see anyone buying into *that* trade. You can keep 'em both.

3. Not going to happen, now - this was 4 years ago...
guess when he realized that wasn't going to fly is about the time he started cozying up to jr and Falwell and the crowd. Just makes his "Plain Talk" even more clearly to be "Opportunistic Talk".

6. McCain is melting . . .
I had hoped he'd hang around longer to land a few on other 'Lican front runners, but at least this keeps him further away from 1600 Penn. Ave.

5. its part of his pandering to the right.
This story just makes him look more and more opportunistic. We have seen it for years - but a lot of folks didn't. Now - all is clear to everyone.

10. From what I'd read, their close friendship ended with the 2004
campaign, primarily over both McCain's attacks on Kerry and his refusal to soundly denounce the SwiftLiars.

13. his criticisms of the Swifties was very generalized
something along the lines of 'folks should not disparage other folks service... the end.'

7. He first considered it in 2001?
2001? After that speck-tak-you-lur win by Bush? I don't get it. Unless he was so disgusted by the likes of Rove.

12. Yes, but what was it that made him stay in the end?
Did he end up selling his soul or something? It's just odd to me that he would actually go so far as to approach the Democrats about switching parties--that's extreme. And then to pretty much go lockstep with Bush on votes.

2004, I can understand given all things considered. But 2001 he (Bush) had just been installed.

14. If it was Rove that did in his presidential bid...
Why in HELL would he embrace him and his tactics now? Is this a case of Stockholm Syndrome?

15. My read... he found he got great traction as a "maverick"
candidate in 2000. Got trounced and slimed by dirty tricks ala Rove - and grew more angry at Bushco and still saw a hope as a "maverick" candidate. That would be the time frame of talking with Daschle - but he really is more conservative than the dem party - and he would lose that special status. By now his presidential aspirations were growing even bigger. Would guess he was still in that mind - and perhaps with or without his blessing this guy from his camp goes to feel out Kerry regarding a "Maverick" position for VP. When rebuked - and when it was clear bush was going to be reelected - he decides 'if you can't beat 'em; join 'em' and since early 2005 he starts pandering to bushco base. He makes nicey nice with Falwell, he panders on the Hill for Bushco (with the exception of the torture bill which in the end he caved on), and thinks that now Rove will be on his side so all bad blood forgiven in pursuit of the "golden ring."

16. Exactly - McCain was calculating at every point for positioning in 2008.
But, I do believe he thought that he could gain from being "SEEN" as a desirable name on a Dem ticket. He had nothing to fear from the corporate press who was always protective of his image at that point.

11. McCain is miscalculating here.
He assumes that everyone else is as lacking in personal integrity as he is.

McCain, despite being smeared every which possible way by the Bushies, cozied up to them and now has even adopted their Iraq strategy.

Kerry should remember McCain's half-assed defense of Kerry's Vietnam record when the whole swiftboat thing erupted. If McCain were not such a weenie, he would have forcefully come out and smashed that group. But that might have made the election harder for his buddy the Chimp, so McCain didn't make too much of a fuss.
