Nations largest food drive is TODAY! Put a non-perishable in your mailbox

On Saturday, May 9, 2009 letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will deliver much more than mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes. They will also gather the generosity of their postal customers participating in the 17th annual NALC National Food Drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

In 2008, 73.1 million pounds of food was collected by the 300,000 members of the National Association of Letter Carriers AFL-CIO and delivered to local community food banks, pantries and shelters.

The NALC food drive works in partnership with the AFL-CIO Community Services network; America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s food bank network and United Way of America. All citizens need to do is to place a box or can of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday, May 9th. The carrier will do the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted and delivered by union volunteers to an area food bank or pantry for needy families to access.

An estimated 30 million people face hunger every day in America, including more than 12 million children. This drive is especially important this year to those who have lost their jobs in this economy and to the millions more who face economic uncertainty.

Please publicize and promote the May 9, 2009 food drive among your members. State and local labor councils and Community Services staff should volunteer to assist their local NALC branch with collecting, sorting and delivery of food. I guess I'll just write a check. Food banks typically get $1.70 worth of food for every $1.00 they get in donations.

5. Writing a check is very good as they can often access double or

triple the amount of food because companies give them discounts.

6. Bag is out by the mailbox now.

Peanut butter, beans, rice, V-8, canned tomato.

Sadly, mine is the only bag I've seen today. I hope some more appear.

8. They just got ours

Two bags worth. This was our third drive in a month. First was the boy scouts. Then at work. Now for the Letter Carriers.
