Sarah Palin hails Obama's embrace of Bush's Polar Bear rule

JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is hailing the Interior secretary's decision to leave in place a regulation from the Bush administration that limits protection of the polar bear from global warming.

Officials say protecting endangered species is not the way to deal with climate change.

Palin says the decision will provide for continued monitoring and protections for polar bears under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and international treaties.

change the regs that would apply to that region's industrial activity (oil and gas). While it is understood that the the polar bears are losing hunting and numbers ground due to polar ice melting, they can't draw a direct link to those particular industries as causing it. (All of us, in fact, are causing it.) They have to have a direct link between cause an effect to use the Endangered Species Act to change those businesses. The explanation I heard was that legally, it can't be done unless they get a direct link.

Edited for erroneous word in subject line.

7. There are several causes from oil development
Oil development in the Arctic poses a wide range of threats to polar bears ranging from oil spills to increased human-bear interactions. It is probable that an oil spill in sea ice habitat would result in oil being concentrated in leads and between ice floes resulting in both polar bears and their main prey (ringed and bearded seals) being directly exposed to oil. Another concern is that seals covered in oil may be a major source of oil to polar bears. Other studies suggest that polar bears are sensitive to disturbance at maternity den sites. Disturbance could occur both when a pregnant female is selecting a den site and during the winter-spring after the cubs are born. If exploration or development occurred sufficiently close to a den, the mother may abandon the den prematurely or abandon her offspring.

was saying about it. They didn't get into specifics of the arguments either way.
