Edited on Fri May-08-09 07:42 PM by roamer65
That's the Pepsi I remember from the 1970's when they used real sugar. Damn, is it good. No gooey high fructose corn syrup aftertaste either.

Woah. I hope this starts a trend and more soft drinks follow suit. I would be a happy camper if Coke and Dr. Pepper with sugar were more easily available. :)

46. Mexican Coke
has been available forever here in the Bay Area, from a wholesaler in San Jose.

It is also at Costco and Bev Mo everywhere I have been out west.

Very dangerous to keep around as it is highly addictive for me and I don't stop until they are all empty.

Just my dos centavos

7. I had one of those today as well.
It had the Mountain Dew taste I remember. It was not as sweet in 1970's and had a citrus "lemony" tinge due to the citric acid. I cannot stomach the garbage they call "Mtn Dew" nowadays.

26. The official rollout was April 20, and the promotion period supposedly was "8 weeks".
Of course it seems like it took a few weeks to get this stuff widely distributed. I hadn't actually seen the "fridge packs" of cans in the store until today, just the single 20 oz plastic bottles (and damn few of them)

So it will probably be gone by the end of June. Though Pepsi would be insane to pass up all the money they could make off this stuff, if they extended it through the summer.

9. Just picked some up at the store
I've avoided the mega brand colas for years, once I realized what high fructose corn poison was doing to me. I'm really more of a Coke drinker than a Pepsi drinker, and I've bought the Mexican Coke now and then (though it costs about twice as much as the stuff from Atlanta), but I bought the Pepsi & Mt. Dew today, as a message to Pepsi that "you keep making this stuff, and people will buy it". And if Pepsi keeps this around, you can bet your ass that Coke will change back to sugar immediately. They already do it every spring to make the "Kosher" Coke anyway (which unfortunately can't be found in my one-synagogue town)

Hoping to see both Coke & Pepsi back on sugar full time by the end of this year. Money talks. Send Pepsi the message.

They mix citric acid into the present mix, which tends to kill the cola flavor IMHO.

21. If you want to try a cola that's a little less sweet, look for Red Bull Cola

It's fairly new, at least in the US, so it may not be everywhere yet. Cane sugar, and naturally flavored. Less sugar than other colas. Somewhere in between Coke & Pepsi in terms of flavor. I almost thought it reminded me of the old RC Cola, but I haven't had one of those in over 25 years.

30. We used to get the Cokes made in Mexico from lunch trucks in the Los Angeles area.
They were good, but a little sweeter than I remember and not as carbonated.

I'd give my right arm for a pristine example of an old fashioned Coke bottle from my youth. I remember filling my Radio Flyer wagon with coke bottles and dragging it to the store for a nickel a bottle. Them was the days. Except for the day I pulled my wagon off the curb (long before they modified the curbs) and it turned over. Every bottle broke right there in the gutter, at a busy intersection. I do remember though, a guy about my Dad's age who pulled over and helped me pick up the glass...

They're selling the bottles 2/$1.00. And the 12 packs of cans are 4 for the price of 3, if you wanted to stock up on this stuff. Which might not be a bad idea, since it's apparently a limited release.

25. Yes. Bought a 12 can pack of Pepsi Throwback a few days ago....
It's AWESOME!

I'm gonna buy another 24 cans tomorrow ~ I'm having the family over to my house for a Mother's Day BBQ (I'm a single mom and get to BBQ for everyone for "Mother's Day", go figure! ~ anyways, I thought it would be a nice "treat"/experiment. Topic for conversation, at least.

I like it. My kids like it too. (We don't drink very much soda anymore, b/c of the HFCS). Jones Soda is a favorite, but it's a "treat" b/c of its price point. We typically have homemade tea/iced tea, lemonade, and citrus 'flavored water' these days. But the Pepsi Throwback was really really good/intriguing.

29. Remember the "burn" effect?
When I was a kid, if you drank soda too quickly, you'd regret it because it burned your mouth and throat. I don't know why, but I've always suspected it was from using sugar. You can gulp the shit nowadays and nothing but a bloated stomach.

31. I don't think the "burn effect" was from the SUGAR necessarily.....
...it was probably from just "BEING A GLUTTON!" in general. Taking in much more than you need, way too fast....

A bit more carbonated, since the plastic bottles are gas-permeable. Probably get the "burn" from gulping it too fast, but I can't do that anymore...lol.

Like you said . . . Pepsi how it USED to taste before they put battery-acid High Fructose Corn Throwup in it, leaving your mouth and uvula all sticky afterwards.

Now if only they'd bring back Lemon Pepsi with sugar . . . and Wacky Wafers . . .

40. just for a little variety, I'll add my take...
To be fair, I'm usually a coke drinker, but when I heard about Pepsi Throwback I was really excited.

Overall, it was okay--more than anything, it tasted strange to me. It might be because I've never had a pepsi that didn't have corn syrup in it, so I don't have the memories of "old pepsi". I will say, the lack of syrupy aftertaste was a pleasant surprise. I guess if I drank enough of it, I could get used to it, but that's about the best I can say. I did like Mountain Dew throwback a little more--it tasted sort of like a Sprite. But then again, I would probably just get a Sprite, if that's what I wanted. I really wanted to enthusiastically love these drinks--but I guess I'm a high fructose corn syrup junkie.

41. The Pepsi reminded me of the taste as a young kid from the mid 1970's
Same aftertaste from years ago, smoother than the HFCS versions. No citric acid like present Pepsi, so the cola flavor comes through.

The MD from a can is amazing. Reminds me of MD from the old green glass bottles.

We are so used to HFCS that taste buds may need an adjustment to the real stuff. Same as when someone who drinks the aspartame junk drinks a HFCS one.

Lousy marketing, but both old Pepsi and MD are damn good.

There is NO substitute for real sugar. Real sugar brings the smoothness and moderacy back to each of these sodas.
