City To Euthanize 200 'Nuisance' Ducks
Official Says Birds Are Messy, Diseased

OCALA, Fla. -- Ocala officials want to euthanize some 200 ducks they say are a nuisance at a park, while across the street firefighters have adopted a mother duck as their mascot.

The city of Ocala's Recreation and Parks Department is planning to euthanize the 200 Muscovy ducks at Tuscawilla Park.

Director Kathy Crile said Thursday too many ducks in one area can become diseased and messy. The department can't support all the ducks. Plus, some residents are feeding the ducks, which officials said is creating a problem for them.

Meanwhile at the Ocala Fire Chief Brian Stoothoff said they're eagerly waiting for the eggs to hatch.

1. ummm. Dont people eat ducks?
 They should slaughter them and donate them to local the food bank. Not a single meat-eater should be opposed to that.

13. Neither are factory-farmed animals, of any kind
Edited on Fri May-08-09 05:36 PM by Mariana
but people eat them all the same.

Test the water, have a vet take a look at them, and if they aren't sick or contaminated feed people with them.

17. You may be approaching diminishing returns if you're going to give each duck a physical before
serving it up.

18. Feed the ducks to people? Please. Do you know how greasy
ducks are, no matter how you cook them?

5. Muscovys aren't exactly ducks...
They're very similar, and can breed with ducks. I had a one-legged Muscovy hen named FlyGirl, and she was a delightful pet. The eggs are edible, and quite tasty. Perhaps a better solution would be to allow these doomed Muscovys to be adopted? They only need a back yard, a kiddie pool, and a safe enclosure for nights. Keeping two or three is not so much work!

20. Muscovys are ducks, just not native to the parks where they now live
And that is probably why authorities do not want to give them away or release them outside of the city.

I like the idea of killing them for the meat - duck can be greasy but it is still good eating! A simple rub and roast the duck on a rack and yum! Or make your own Turducken: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Turducken/Detail.aspx ;)

7. Why do they say euthanize when they mean kill
Are they really planning to gently put them down the way a vet does? I doubt it.

19. How sad.
Who give them the right to do this? Morally, I mean, not legally, as ducks clearly have no legal rights. :(
