Will the GOP base embrace Fred Thompson's wife, 24 years his junior...
as a potential First Lady?

April 2006 photo, Kevin Wolf/The Associated Press
Actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson, and his wife, Jeri, arrive for a party at the Macedonian Embassy in Washington after the White House Correspondents' Dinner April 29, 2006.

According to the Christian Chronicle:

"Divorced since the mid-1980s, Thompson married Jeri Kehn, a political and media consultant 24 years his junior, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Naperville, Ill., in 2002. They have two young children. Thompson also has two grown sons and five grandchildren."

According to the Gannett News Service, Jeri, a former GOP operative, is ready to go!

"Here's another sign that Thompson is on the move: His wife Jeri, a former GOP PR operative, has been dusting off her old political reporter contacts list."

Newt will be first in line, followed by Guiliani.

61. Let me defend this lady's boobs for just one second... all three of them.
She and her husband seem to be fairly free of plastic surgery... this couple look their age and they look like they're in love. I'm surprised this snarky little thread wasn't shot down the second someone pointed out Dennis Kucinich's wife (31 yrs his junior) about whom there's been nothing but praise and positive words in this thread.

Cattiness used to be a Republican characteristic. Intruding into people's personal lives used to be a hallmark of Republican policy. I'm appalled by Democrats copycatting them here.

And what's wrong with a little sag in the boob? The woman I date and love has a healthy mature pair of classic tear-drop shaped breasts and I think they're awesome. This agist, sexist, Republican-mimicking line of thought is the slimiest peice of unhumanistic garbage I've seen on DU in a long time.

12. What I would love to see is the MSM to treat her like they treated Hillary Clinton
they treated her as a power-grabbing, manipulative bitch. They even called her the "co-president", trying to insult Bills masculinity (he lets his wife make decisions) and her for being a "Feminazi" (as RWers like to call it).

Of course, they won't.

When Bush talks about how he always consults Laura, suddenly its a virtue and a sign of the strength of their marriage.

And the fact that Thompson's wife is a political consultant who is using her contacts to propel her husband's career? Nothing to see here, folks!

But if you're the outspoken wife of John Kerry, or if you are the wife of a Presidential candidate and former VP candidate, and you happen to contract cancer, then watch out...

Someone is gonna try and tell me that age is just a number, blah, blah, blah, but all we have here is a transaction. She gets power, and he gets ass no man eligible for Medicare should have any legal right to.

They couldn't possibly have anything in common. Yeah, she was a GOP operative, but really, she's 14 years old...how high up could she have been?

Gross. I appear closer in age to my 97 year old grandmother than these two appear.

This looks like when a second marriage's last child goes to the prom with Dad.

38. Those folks who gave Romney $23m, Giuliani $15m, and McCain $12m are not waiting for
an actor who wowed us all in "Curly Sue" and "Baby's Day Out" to allow his highness to be persuaded that the Repub party needs and loves him.

The ship has left and he was not on board. It's not too late for Hagel or Gingrich to jump on board at the last minute because they have already begun the groundwork, but Thompson hasn't.

More importantly, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson has looked at Thompson's mixed record on abortion ans concluded "I don’t think he’s a Christian."

That doesn't mean shit to me or to you or to anyone with two brain cells to keep each other company, but it means a hell of a lot to someone who is already two strikes behind in the count and is just now mulling over whether or not he;'s interested in swinging at the last pitch.

It is too late for Thompson, and he was never that good of a candidate anyway.

Get over Fred now.

On the OP, obviously the trophy wife is an asset, media and Thompson supporters will treat it that way.

Since rumors of his candidacy have emerged, the only criticism of the guy you see at DU with any regularity is the age of his wife, which has jack fucking shit to do with his ability to govern.

I'm sure the guy is unfit to be president, otherwise he would have left the GOP years ago, but why the fixation on his wife? We only help the GOP if we play their game of keeping political discourse mired in this sort of Rush-like puerile bullshit.

If she wanted to marry an actor, I can name at least ten older actors much more appealing and intellectually compelling than Fred Thompson. The first on my list is Dennis Farina, but somehow, I don't think he'd dig FT's trophy bride.

64. Bush set the bar so low for the Repugs I think they'd vote for a
ground squirrel if it had an R next to it's name. You can't get much lower than Bush.

68. Leave age alone, stick to character!
Age shouldn't matter as long as the spouse is legal and capable of consent. There are plenty of age-diverse relationships here at DU, and many of us don't appreciate hearing that others consider our relationships to be creepy, sick or full of ulterior motives.

On the other hand, actions speak louder than words...such as Judi Nathan's past career, Rudy's divorce announcements to the press, Newt's service of divorce papers to his wife's hospital room, and so on!

This is his wife. I do not know who the person in the photo in the OP is.

75. If they're happy, I don't see the big deal about their ages.
It's not like she's 15 years old and he's 39. They're both adults and she looks like a reasonably attractive woman with a big chest. Certainly more attractive than a Babs Bush...

(for the record, I'm 40 and my wife will be 37 on Thursday)

76. He's having children, at 60?
I could not care less that his wife is attractive and young. My parents were 13 years apart and my mom was always fairly attractive - certainly enough for a "trophy wife" accusation.

But nobody should be having kids at 60. That's when you're scraping the bottom of the genetic barrel. His kids could be perfectly all right, but when people get to be a certain age, having children should be off limits.
