GOP governor eyeing Senate run to be outed in film tomorrow
http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/05/07/gop-governor-eyeing-senate-run-to-be-outed-in-film/

The Republican governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, who is strongly considering a run for Senate, will be outed in a independent film being released tomorrow.

The film, “Outrage,” tracks the outings of prominent gay political figures, such as Crist and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman. It’s being produced by Magnolia Pictures and will appear in Landmark Theaters across the country.

...

“The usual suspects are all there: Craig, Florida Governor Charlie Crist, former New York mayor Ed Koch, former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, former Rep. Ed Schrock, even dusty McCarthy relic Roy Cohn. Again, if you’re reading this review, then you’re likely no stranger to gay media, particularly gay online media (which is credited in the film as being one of the few places where these scandals are openly discussed) and none of these men is an unfamiliar candidate for speculation.”

I'd guess only nationally known figures are targeted. We have a couple of them here in Missouri, although it seems one was forced to not run for re-election because his wife found out and threatened to raise a stink. How do I know this? I live in the state capitol...one hears things.

1. I know all the "War is Hell" analogies and "Hypocrites don't deserve privacy" rhetoric, but...
I just don't think outing someone is right. The ends don't seem to justify the means. If someone wants their life to be private, we, as liberals and supposedly champions of liberty, should respect his right to remain closeted. I don't agree with his choice, but I don't think the public has the right to up-end his life and career. If he was a gay-baiting oppressor, I might feel differently. But he's not and so I don't.

This whole personal-attack style politics just creeps me out.

5. I'm not familiar with Crist, but...
"the film makes the case for each man’s homosexuality, and presents his lifetime gay rights voting record,” according to one reviewer. “In each instance, the disconnect is staggering."

Are you (and others responding) saying there is no such disconnect in his case?

My position is, I agree on a right to privacy, but when one publiclly advocates government-sponsored discrimination/intrusion into the lives of others based on such a characteristic, I think that right is effectively sacrified. When closeted gay men do this, they are living a Big Lie that their constituents deserve to be aware of.

2. As a registered Florida dem I have no problem with Charlie Crist at all.

This "outing" business is plainly lame. Everyone that's at the very least somehow connected to the real world knows Charlie is gay. It matters not and hopefully this will be another enormous FAIL for these homophobes. I hope no one pays to see this crud.

3. I pretty much agree. Any disagreement I have with Crist are with his politics
NOT with his personal preferences. His sexual preferences make as much difference to me as a voters as whether he likes vanilla or chocolate ice cream.
