Mormon GOP Congressman from Utah threatens to prevent D.C.s new marriage provision from becoming law
Yesterday, the D.C. City Council passed legislation that would allow D.C. to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Only our former Mayor Marion Barry, who has been married four times, voted no.

D.C. is subject to Congressional interference with our laws. And, as expected, a top Republican is already talking about blocking the bill:
At least one GOP member said yesterday that he will try to block the bill from becoming law.

"Some things are worth fighting for, and this is one of them," said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah), the ranking Republican on a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee that oversees the District. "It's not something I can let go softly into the night. . . . I recognize the Democrats are in the majority, but I represent the majority of Americans on this issue."

4. Does anyone know how Congressional oversight of DC works on stuff like this?
If they want to block DC, do they have to pass a law and have the president sign it? Or do they have some easier ways to get what they want?

8. Can they do this? Yes. Here's what KOS said yesterday:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/5/728171/-Can-Congress-block-DC-Councils-recognition-of-same-sex-marriage

Under the city’s limited Home Rule charter, Congress retains authority to overturn or change any laws passed by the City Council and signed by the mayor.

In drafting and approving the Home Rule charter in the early 1970s, Congress created a process for overturning city laws through a direct disapproval resolution. A disapproval resolution initially required a simple majority vote by either the House or Senate. A court ruling later forced Congress to change the process by requiring both the House and Senate to pass a disapproval resolution and for the president to sign it.

Probably not things this idiot cares much about. But two people in a committed relationship 3,000 miles from his home state . . . that's one of those "things worth fighting for."
