So went to the doc for routine check...
and here is how not so seriously they are taking it/

Everybody gets a nice form for the usual symptoms of the flu... if any are checked yes, well patient is given a wonderful mask (for all you ninnies that claim they are useless), they are asked to seat away from the rest of the patients, and nurses (and docs) will wear the protective gear.

Yep, from what I saw they are not taking it seriously at all. :sarcasm:

I also talked to my doc... hell I was on GROUND ZERO when this broke, so we had a good laugh about that. Never mind I am way after the potential for infection and we were both joking about this.

Here is what concerns CDC, (Yes already knew it, but perhaps the ninnies will get it) the second wave in Sept time frame. On the plus side, they SHOULD have a vax by the time second wave hits.

Oh and the necessary disclaimer...

If this information scares you, I am sorry. I am also sorry if you need to belittle the information on this post.

2. The mask will prevent infected people from passing it
to others, but compliance is low. If you've ever sneezed with a mask on you know why. It's distinctly unpleasant.

As for the second wave in September, yes, that is generally much more serious in any flu that first emerges in late springtime. I sincerely hope they do have a vaccine by then. We're going to need one.

by much

Sneezing into the mask of the breathing apparatus used by firefighters

Yep, been there, done that, got the T-Shirt and the cleanup job

6. This flu will be one of the ones in the vaccine in the Fall.
It'll be yet another seasonal flu variety. I'll get my shot as early as possible, as I always do. Others will not. They'll be the ones lying in bed taking overdoses of Nyquil in December and January.

Every year a new strain or two of influenza. They just caught this one as it was developing. The vaccine is already in the works. It may even be available by the end of August.

Get your flu shots, folks. They work. But get 'em early, before it starts spreading. If you wait until it's in your area, you may catch it during the time the vaccine needs to develop your immunity.

12. Though yuo are mostly right this one IS different
Human strains are of the B variety, this one is of the A, that is animal variety

That said, they expect TWO vaccines, one for this, and one for the human flu... two shots

Last Fall's flu vaccine contained an A-type H1N1 flu virus, plus an H3N2 virus. It's really funny...all the misinformation out there. Google 2008 Flu Vaccine, and you'll see.

A-type flus come around every few years, and H1N1 flus are not at all uncommon in humans. Most of our flus are hosted in animals before becoming infectious to humans.

This one's not all that different, except that it has both swine and avian components, plus the human ones, now.

From the CDC, here are the three flu types contained in the vaccine for the 2008-2009 season. As you see, there are two type A varieties and one Type B. :

"The flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. This year’s influenza vaccine contains three new influenza virus strains. They'll do the same with this "swine" flu, and combine it with whatever other strains they think may strike:

They are:

A/Brisbane/59/2007(H1N1)-like virus;
A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2)-like virus;
B/Florida/4/2006-like virus.

29. She could be.
I think it's interesting that an H1N1 virus was in this past year's vaccine. From what I understand, it may actually provide some immunity against this new virus. Not complete, but it may cause a milder form of the disease to develop.

I'd sure like to see some stats on how many current sufferers had the flu shot last fall, with a comparison of severity of symptoms.

Edited on Mon May-04-09 07:49 PM by nadinbrzezinski
happened in 1999, so perhaps that is why they started it in?

As to stats

Here is a clue from the data emerging from mexico, the sick and dead mostly came from marginalized areas.

There are two possibilities

Private docs are not reporting, a no-no and against the rules, but possible

The better to do got the vaccine while the poor didn't. And while the Mexican child immunization program is a model (yep got to chase kids at one point), the outreach for the poorer for things like the Flu is best left to luck.

So combine that, with lower nutritional status, higher upper respiratory such as ashtma, there you go... if this is very mild they'd be the ones to buy it

17. Sounds like two "doctors" who need a good slap upside the head.
Probably the same sort who tell people with cat bites that they don't need antibiotics right away. Or that a bat in the bedroom at night is no reason for concern.......

Do emergency doc residencies teach them anything at all about public health and CDC? Do medical schools? There is no earthly reason why I, a veterinarian, should be so much more on the ball than physicians when it comes to public health issues.

Shameful.

20. Well, a hospital would be the last place to expect any "panic".
Medical personnel are trained to respond based on strict protocols. If no criteria had been met for anyone to be wearing masks, they wouldn't be wearing them.

"Panic" is a movie/TV/media invention for the most part. Screaming, crying, running around blindly - how very silly and unprofessional.

19. Well unlike you, who thinks this is hype, I will be peachy keen if this is
just a fire drill when all is said and done

But I know something you do not know, we cannot, the world cannot, let the guard fully down until next May or so.

I also know that the hype prevented a faster spread, but then again I do have a clue on how this works

You see, if nothing happens it will be because of the tireless work of public health professionals, who people like you have absolutely no clue what they do.

I happen to know what they do... and when all goes well, you will be able to say it was hype

And I sure hope you are able to say this was a dud too.

from that Dojo right?

Denial son is not just a river in egypt

By the way, I do not expect oodles of bodies either, but double national rate would be horrific enough.

Then again, in LESS DEVELOPED places, you know emerging economies, the death rate could be much higher... not that this matters, after all this would not be in the US... and we know Americans are very insular and if it did not happen in the US of A, it never happened.

Another sad side effect of this, that we are seeing in-spades.

Not only are Muricans ignorant, but willfully so, and also ignorant of what happens outside the borders of the US.
