(04-28) 19:39 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in California today as a painstaking search for swine flu turned up its first probable Bay Area cases: a 60-year-old San Rafael woman and her 20-month-old granddaughter, who recently traveled to Mexico, as well as a 16-year-old San Jose girl who recently returned from Southern California.
Marin and Santa Clara county health officials concluded that the three people had swine flu after tests showed they had viruses that were of the same type and did not match known flu bugs. However, state health officials said they needed to confirm the cases by comparing them to the swine flu strain.
Like other swine flu sufferers in the United States, the victims experienced only mild illnesses. None was hospitalized. But deaths in Mexico continue to worry and perplex health officials, who expect to find more cases in the Bay Area. They also expect the virus to kill in this country.
"If we're in a mild phase, hopefully it will stay mild," said Bonnie Sorensen, deputy director of the California Department of Public Health.
