Notre Dame is in the process of finding a more deserving recipient.

2. I recon that no matter how convoluted her 'new' speech was..it always sounded
somehow racist, sexist and trite, compared to the person she would be up against?

3. Good, she won't get a medal she doesn't deserve.
Hell, just give it to Obama. ;-)

4. I have to say, the ND "Fuck You, Then" was succinct.
And here is a statement from Father Jenkins:

“We are, of course, disappointed that Professor Glendon has made this decision. It is our intention to award the Laetare Medal to another deserving recipient, and we will make that announcement as soon as possible.”

All those lovely words are "code" for "Gee, you whiny fool, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out! No one knows who you are, anyway--our next pick will be more of a "name brand!" Enjoy the thirty seconds of fame you'll milk out of your poutrageous letter, because that's all you're getting--see, no one gives a shit about you!"

I still think the "Ewww, we can't talk to people who don't share our beliefs about SPECIFIC things, like ....AHHHHHHHHbooaaaaaaa-shun....and Biiiiiiirth control....or the sky will fall!!!" bullshit is just stupid. Over the years, the Catholics have been able to relate to faiths that don't share their doctrine--so why, now, all of a sudden, do they get shirty over PEOPLE? Individuals??? Given that they aren't paragons of sainthood, they really shouldn't play the "without sin" stone throwers!

8. Hypocritical old bitch. Fuck her.
And fuck Notre Dame.

And totally fuck the Vatican.

Why the hell do we have an ambassador to a church office, anyway? Fucking hell, we don't have an ambassador to my church's headquarters. Or to any head Buddhist shrine in Japan.

Why does the Catholic Church get an ambassador to its offices?

Fuck that.

10. I think Obama should spend the next 4 years proposing
ambassadors that the Vatican turns down.

13. I agree! It would send the message "You aren't really a country, so fuck you"
I think it would be hilarious.

He should send Mary Daly next. Then Richard Dawkins. Then one of the gay ordained male clergy of the United Church of Christ. Then one of the gay ordained female clergy of the United Church of Christ.

Then send George Dubya, and watch as the Vatican doesn't protest at all, even though he's pro death penalty (and the Catholic Church is against the death penalty) and pro war with Iraq (which the Catholic Church was also against), to show the hypocrisy that even though those are both against church teaching, since neither involves sex and only involve murder/violence, the Vatican is totally willing to compromise.

15. Because the Vatican is a state.
They can serve as a valuable source of information and can provide confidential contacts. Sometimes people can allow your prejudice to completely cloud your reasoning.

16. Yes, I know they're a state. The Uber-Question, which I thought was implied in my question,
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 07:13 PM by Rabrrrrrr
is, Why does anyone consider the Vatican a state? Other than the reason of countries being afraid not to consider it a state, since it "represents" such a huge population around the world.

And I don't know that people are allowing my prejudices to cloud my reasoning.

If you're Catholic and offended, I apologize, but I do not back down on my position that the Vatican is nothing more than a religious headquarters/office. It has no right to be a state, and like Germany is the only country with the courage to tell the Dianetics assholes that they aren't a religion, the United States should take the lead in telling the Vatican that it's nothing more than a set of offices.

9. Maybe they'll double down and give the award to Michelle
But they'll have to cover up all the "IHS" and other such stuff for the ceremony.

11. Whay are so many posters attacking Notre Dame?
Father Jenkins, the university president, made the invitation and is not backing down. The president of the alumni association has written in defense of the Obama address. Most of the protest is coming from born again Catholics like Newt Gingrich, with no connection to the university, a few bishops trying to make points with the pope and a few alums who don't know the difference between a global university and a parochial elementary school.

14. I guess it's hard to know who's who in this fight.
The school, or the idiot alumni who seem to be the most vocal about all this.

Never been a fan of the football team either.
