To some it is an emergency

Jorge Guzman, who's son died today of the swine flu, receives a hug in front of Mexico's National Institute for Respiratory illnesses, INER, in Mexico City, Mexico, Saturday, April 25, 2009. As Mexico struggled to contain the strange new flu that has killed as many as 68, it was clear Saturday that the virus outran government efforts to head off what the World Health Organization is calling an international public health emergency.

Mexican Federal Policemen wear masks in Mexico City April 25, 2009. A new flu strain that has killed up to 68 people in Mexico could become a global pandemic, the World Health Organization warned on Saturday, as health experts tried to track the disease's spread.

1. We shouldn't worry though....an airborne virus like this can't cross borders.
We're all good!

3. OK. What do you think? Should we freak, or remain calm?
I'm very sorry for that family. Was their son around any bovines recently?

Seriously, where is this coming from? No one knows.

5. Trying to track it
patient zero for mexico apparently is a man who died in Oaxaca on the 9th

Of course the timeline for the US has infections starting in March

So it is truly a medical detective mystery

As to bovines, no... the problem is that this has jumped from animal to human, to human to human transmission, see California, they did not involve any animal contact

Now panicked... not yet,

Wash hands, avoid crowded places, wash hands... stay home if sick, wash hands, cover your nose when you sneeze, wash hands, and of course don't hug others...and wash hands

Washing hands is extremely effective

Oh and keep an eye on the news... and see where this is spreading too

Me... hope not to come from one hot zone to another, but I know washing hands should do the trick most of the time

6. It will be nice when they call it something other than swine flu,
considering pigs aren't involved. Or are they?

Who knows??

7. They are... swine, pigs are very receptive to
human and bird flu, the perfect place where you can get these new strains

The same thing happened in 1918, 1957 and 1968

9. We should want to know as much as we possibly can
I can not understand what harm there is in searching for the truth of a situation, wondering about so many people affected by this, why do people here label me as peddling panic, why do they assign me with an agenda that was so far from the truth? I was just posting the facts, I never said once panic, I was never paniced. I was just wondering

10. F.E.A.R.
This shit scares people and they don't want to think it could happen to them, so a first reaction of denial/mockery is pretty standard.

Thanks for staying on top of this news. :hi:

I was in Mexico City less than a year ago and I keep picturing the streets, the people, the impoverished conditions - and it saddens me enormously.

12. You are right. Truth is good.
I've read too many freak-outs today, and heard them, to know what is really happening. I don't think it's as bad as I've heard and read, but a dose of facts is welcome.

Thanks.

11. There is a midline between freak-out and ignoring it

8. Yes, at any given moment in this world there is an event or tragedy that is an emergency for some.
As sad as that is and however much I feel badly for them, that does not make it an emergency for me. An emergency for some does not mean it is an emergency for most or even many. There need to be some distinctions.
