Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker
(This story is a little old)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

2. K&R

I have posted several times when pit bulls have attacked people here in the Omaha area over the last 18 months. This is the other side.

6. That's right,........
They might occasionally go after a bad guy rather than a kid.

5. Good doggie!
I hope he found his way home.

All the pit bulls I've ever met were sweethearts. They're just unpredictable, especially around small children, so I'd never leave one attended with kids under 10 or so.

7. They can be the sweetest dogs.
So can Chows, but you really have to watch them because they do have this strong aggression instinct. The sad thing about my Chow is that she's been attacked at least a half dozen times because owners have been walking their dogs without leashes. And then they just stand there, too afraid to pull their dogs off of mine. I guess Pit Bulls, Chows and Rotties are definitely Alpha dogs (for the most part).

29. our chow mix is the sweetest dog ever
He'll let other dogs walk all over him. And where people are concerned, he's the perfect guard dog--all bark, absolutely no bite.

Not to deny that the breed as a whole can be aggressive. But it sounds like your doggie is a lot like ours.

15. I think they are predictable.
Sadly, it's just that what children do is often associated with what food does (for lack of a better phrasing).

You are correct that a dog (or any pet) should never be left alone with someone who doesn't understand animal behavior.

31. the only thing wrong with pit bulls are dipshit owners. if you are going
to get a warrior breed dog, know how to train them and make sure from day one that they don't get away with dominant behavior. I *LOVE* pitties. They are angels if they are given good leadership from day one.

11. That's just not possible
Everyone knows that pit bulls are Satan's minions!
:sarcasm:

But, having said that, loose dogs are dangerous to themselves and to others. People should ensure that their dogs do not have the ability to roam freely. Some dogs are pretty good escape artists, though, and more intelligent than the people who own them.

14. some sure are. i had a german shepherd that i took in as a stray. i quickly
found out how she came to be wandering the streets. she was amazing. she jumped out of second story windows, jumped 4' fences, climbed 6' fences, broke chains, just everything. she was, however, the most loyal guardian i or my kids ever had. the best bad dog i ever had. the worst part is that she taught 3 other dogs how to wander. dogs.

19. My sister had a similar escape artist, a collie
My parents kept the dog when my sister went on trips, they had a kennel with a six foot fence. The dog jumped on the dog house roof, and then jumped three feet up and across to get over the fence. My parents, and the dog were lucky, because they tried chaining her in the locked fence. An hour later she was out, the chain, with her collar still attached were over the fence--fortunately the collar slipped off her neck.

22. very lucky
many dogs have been hung that way.
the worst part about her escapades was that she would come home, and hang out around the house until i saw that she was back. in the meantime, she perforated the pantlegs of anyone unfortunate enough to activate her radar.

If that dog is really lost I hope s/he found the way home.

If s/he was abandoned then I hope someone finds that dog and opens their home.

of human intent and feeling. I totally believe that, on some level, that dog knew that the attacker was a danger and the woman might be able to take care of him.

27. It's not the BREED of dog - it's the PEOPLE who come in contact with the dog
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 12:30 AM by TankLV
that is the problem - and how those people TREAT the dog - especially in it's formative years...

so-called "pit bulls" used to be a favorite pet in years gone by till thugs and other idiots MISTREATED the poor animals.

I had a pit bull (or was it a rotweiler) that I rescued on her last day at the pound - and she was the sweetest nicest dog and got along with my two golden retrievers and CAT famously till she died peacefully in her sleep one summer morning...

I will always love our "Lady"...and miss her terribly. My only regret is that we couldn't have been a part of her life from the very beginning. She must have been loved very much before we got her - or else she was very forgiving to humans and just ate up all the affection we bestowed on her for the too short time we shared her life...
