Racism comes in all colors.....
....Jamie Foxx should be fired for his comments in regard to Mylie Cyrus...just like Don Imus was for his comments about the girls basketball team.

I've never been a fan of her's, but I was a fan of his untill I heard this racist rant...there is NO excuse for this to be apologized away as *comedy*. :evilfrown:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUvWcegtqik

I don't have cable nor do I pay for radio...so this was news to me yesterday...can't even begin to express my disgust with this kind of behavior...regardless of what color your skin is...it's HATE SPEECH. :(

1. What exactly was racist about that?
Crude, yes, but not racist.

And I doubt he'd get fired for it -- it's from a satellite-radio show where the rules are much less restrictive.

3. No excuse for it either but I will give the guy credit for one thing...
When he apologized on Leno it wasn't one of those non-apologies like, "I'm sorry if my comments might have offended some people". He said he was wrong, owned up to it and apologized to her personally.

I can just imagine the outcry if any African-American star was called a "black bitch," but I'm not surprised that people are contorting themselves and logic to somehow defend it.

I don't care if Foxx said it or not -- this is Imus in reverse and should lead to the same consequences for Foxx as it did for Imus.

Look back at your OP. You very clearly thought the "racism" was worthy of him being fired, but didn't think the ugly sexism merited even a passing comment.

When others raised the issue, when you acknowledged it at all, it was only to redirect the conversation back to racism.

This brings me to an interesting conclusion - that your concerns about black people oppressing white people in this country outweigh your concerns about men oppressing women.

5. I listened to it twice and still can't understand what they were saying.
It just sounded like a bunch of jabber to me. (I have a hearing problem and audio only presents extra challenges). Is there a transcript?

And I'll be honest, celebs trashing each other (Like Natalie and Toby or Olbermann and O'Reilly) is fun to watch I guess, but in my world where it's everything I can do to get from waking up to going to bed without imploding, Imus or Foxx or anyone else running their mouths has very little significance. I normally don't have enough of me to be outraged.

I've always "read" Jamie Foxx as someone who generally has a low opinion of whites anyway and I always assumed we earned that opinion.

7. The rundown:
Jamie's guest says Miley Cyrus was rebuffed by Radiohead when she said she wanted to meet them at the Grammys. As a result, Cyrus claimed she would "destroy" Radiohead.

Jamie and his cohosts mocked her for this, citing Radiohead's huge popularity, etc., then Jamie told Cyrus to make a sex tape or do heroin like Amy Winehouse, etc., to get more cred.

But there was absolutely nothing racist said by Jamie, despite what the OP claims.

13. No, it wouldn't.
The Don Imus example you used involved his use of "nappy-headed," a racially loaded term, to describe the Rutgers girls. Jamie Foxx himself did not use any racially loaded language, so if a white comedian used the exact same words Jamie did, it wouldn't have a racial tint to it.

21. You're assuming an equivalency
between oppressor and oppressed classes.

"Black bitch" <-- black is used to put a person "in their place" by reminding everyone of their lower status/value in our society. Think about what the underlying message is.

"white bitch" <-- what place are they trying to keep her in? The top rung of the ladder? Is that the same kind of message? Hell, that's a place of privilege, which I took as the undertone in what they were saying - that she's overly privileged and acts accordingly.

Again, the sexism in their statements was completely contemptible and I wish we lived in a society where people were as likely to get fired for sexism as racism. But trying to argue that flipping the races of the oppressed and oppressor leaves you with an equivalent statement just doesn't work, because in our society, the status and history of those races is not equivalent.

Boiling it down to its simplest power structure: CEOs mocking their sweat-shop laborers is not equivalent to sweat-shop laborers mocking their CEOs.

As if calling some a "yuppie snob asshole" were an equivalent example of classism as phrases like "white trash" and "bridge and tunnel." The social standing of the race, class, creed, sexual orientation, etcetera in question is not irrelevant.

108. That is complete bullshit
I am so f'ing sick of hearing people go on about how 'Black' is a derogatory word.

You want to know what the real problem is? It is that any word ever used to describe someone of my race will be eventually be used by some as a derogatory word. My grandmother referred to herself as "colored". Do you think she meant that in a derogatory way? But some asshole comes along and decides he doesn't like people who look like her and starts saying derogatory things about "colored" people. Now all of a sudden, that becomes a word you can't use any more. Same with negro... same with the next word that comes along to describe us. You know what? The problem doesn't lie with the word. It isn't that "black" describes a lower status or lower value. It is that there are some people that want to make sure that nobody forgets that people like me are of lower status and lower value no matter what word we use to describe ourselves.

In my opinion, this is the most dangerous form of racism that exists because it has the power to get people who are not inherently racist to unwittingly feed into and support a power structure where people like me (and all words ever used to describe me) will forever be thought of as second class.

The term "white" has been used to describe white people since the 17th century. Why do black people have to keep changing what they are called?

117. I fully agree with this part of what you wrote:
"The problem doesn't lie with the word. It isn't that "black" describes a lower status or lower value. It is that there are some people that want to make sure that nobody forgets that people like me are of lower status and lower value no matter what word we use to describe ourselves."

That was what I was trying to get at though you said it better - that the use of "white" or "black" used in contempt/anger aren't equivalent, because white in the context it was used here is used to remind people that the person being described has privilege, and black (in a similar context) is used to make sure nobody forgets, as you say, that the person being described is lower status/value.

The insult isn't in the words "white" or "black" themselves, it's in the underlying message - which varies with context.

The message here was "this girl has privilege" and I object to anyone trying to 1) claim it's racist to point out that white people have privilege, and 2) equate someone calling out a person's privilege to someone calling out a person's lower status/value in our society because of their race.

23. Except Jamie never said "Gummy white bitch."
He called her gummy while his cohost called her "that white bitch."

Your rationale has collapsed on itself. You started out claiming Jamie said racist things, then when you were called out on your mistake, you claimed he's racist by proxy because of his cohost. Then you try to posit a hypothetical where a white comedian combines what Jamie AND his cohost says but with the race reversed.

So what exactly is your point here? We all know what Jamie said was crude, but to claim it as racism is invalid.

She is still a child basically. Because someone is rich, they deserve it? Or it shouldn't matter? What he said was ugly. Beyond ugly. Maybe not racist, but I was surprised he went there. I like Jamie Fox.

And I said several times that what Jamie said was crude (but not racist), but I have a hard time generating much sympathy for anyone as well off as Miley.

Personally, if I had her wealth (or Jamie's wealth, for that matter), you could call me every name in the book and it wouldn't matter much to me. I'd be too busy laughing all the way to the bank.

77. That kind of talk messes up teenagers sometimes.
Kids in schools getting bullied, talked about, etc., it can mess them up, rich or poor. I think she is strong enough to take it because I am sure she reads plenty of ugly stuff about herself. Just seems mean for people to make so much fun a of child, basically.

A normal, non-famous kid being bullied is who I have real sympathy for. What Jamie said was crude, but Miley is in a clear position to brush it off. She won't be crying herself to sleep. Or if she does, she can do it on a mattress of money.

I don't get that part. Do you have to be a certain type to be a Radiohead fan? Miley isn't good enough to them because she is bubblegum?

That aside, your last statement is pitiful. She is 16. I am sure she gets plenty of hate just because any celebrity does. Why people care enough is beyond me. If you don't care for someone, ok, but to go so far as to put another person down because of it... I don't get it. She has done some stupid things. She is ignorant in many ways. But many 16 year olds are. And she does give back some of her money to charities.

What exactly was funny about what Jamie Foxx said? I am guessing if it were your 16 year old child, you wouldn't be laughing so much. Oh wait, she is rich so it doesn't matter.

Real musicians tend to find crap like Miley Cyrus kind of annoying, especially when they're winning Grammies. And for her to respond like a spoiled brat when they didn't want to meet her ("I will ruin them") makes her even more worthy of derision, I don't care how old she is.

76. Sure it does, and Foxx' comment trends toward a form of racism if for no other reason...
than, it would seem as reported; his jaundiced eye only keyed on some white people and not just Miley but I think it was Lohan and Britney, now...

I fucking hate Achy Breaky Heart, Miley is *not* Hanna Montana, Lohan is an on again/off again mess, and Britney well there's that; but Foxx knew what he saying when he keyed on that particular segment...perhaps he has too much money people with too much money are able to think their shit smells likes roses, perhaps he is playing to his base and perhaps that's the way *they* feel about things and are enabling Foxx,

I do sense that if something like that was said by a white 'comic', say Larry The Cable Guy; about Brandy, or Rhianna/Chris Brown, one of the Huckstable kids, or Whitney Houston the roof would have blown of this forum,

So sly and low-grade a form of racism as to pass for 'edgy' urban-terrestrial radio hip-hop comedy at best, so effete and random a comment as to be found worthless and coming too short imo even for a guy like Jamie Foxx

I think the remark was very sexist and nasty, especially directed at a 16-year-old who, by all accounts, is a pretty decent kid.

123. Among other things.
For instance, I don't think it would be inaccurate to describe it as "full of Dave."

124. The overall message I get from this thread is......
...that sexism will never be as offensive to many as racism is. The biggest "crime" of all is the acceptance that...

A. He/she will not get fired because it's sexist, but not racist.

B. She/he will get fired because it's racist, but not sexist, which wouldn't matter any fucking way.

Bottom line is that we're a crude bunch of animals who will fight for the right to berate, and crucify women in the name of "humor", but become outraged if racism is used, even in humor. They're both fucking wrong, and if you can't see that, women will never be accepted as truly equal, even by those who's gender is the object of ridicule. Offered in evidence is Randy Rhodes, who in her "infinite wisdom" found it appropriate to refer to Clinton as a "fucking whore". The support, cheerleading, and mimicing she received here at DU by both men and women was rather sickening, and disheartening, but acceptable by many because of the claim it was "done in humor", which anyone able to activate two brain cells at the same time knows is a false claim. Whether done in the guise of humor, or otherwise, the message to women was the same. "You're not equal, so you're fair game." And women such as Rhodes can say it because of their own status as a woman. She shit right on the heads of women everywhere, and thought she was being clever in doing it. "Fucking whore" will get praise, and free rein. Using the N word will get you banned before you hit the post button. Bizarre, but I have a feeling that the double standard will still be championed even after reading this. Bottom line is, sexism just doesn't play as well, or stroke the self-righteous ego as well as racism, hence it's relegation to the lower tiers of morality. It shouldn't be that way, and as "progressives", we should know better. This is one of those things that put us closer to the opposition party than we'd like to think. Thanks.

133. I suspect you'd feel differently if you identified first by gender, rather than race. (nt)
