My 6 month old grandson Jason is in the hospital from immunization shots

I wasn't sure about posting this. I finally decide to go ahead and do it.

Jason got his 6 month shots Wednesday. Yesterday he was rushed to the hospital after having pre-shocks and seizers. He came home late yesterday. He went back in with high fever and more seizers at 5 A.M. this morning. He has had a bad day. Spinal tap. MRI. Tests I've never heard of. The IV needle shifted and his arm is twice the size it should be.

The test results are encouraging. No brain tumor. No meningitis. He was sitting up and laughing at Ma & Pa this afternoon. His fever is down. They will keep him through Sunday at least.

Many of you know our family are all film buffs. Jason is named after 2 movie characters. Care to guess which ones they might be?

29. It is not the number, it is the concentration, I think
I don't understand why each vaccine has to have - what, 8 or 10 allergens?

Is reducing the number of injections better than giving more of them, each with only 1 or 2 allergens? I don't know. I think that such a massive dose would be a shock to anyone's system, not just babies.

39. I don't know. Perhaps bad example. I do know that each
carries several allergens which I think are too many.

43. MMR and DPT.
There are very few severe vaccine reactions. Those are usually isolated to children with genetic problems.

2. Not knowing the specifics, can I just tell you that they are being cautious?
It's not unusual for a baby to have a febrile reaction/seizures to immunizations.

I am praying for you, my friend. Try not to worry. If he is reacting to mommy and daddy, he will most likely be fine.

Immunizations are essential for herd immunity, but stories like that are worrisome.

9. My daughter had severe reaction to MMR
when she was 4, but she's apparently suffered no long term effects. She's 15 now and hormones are the only thing wrong with her lately.
Hoping for a healthy/happy outcome for your grandson.

10. Immunizations are shocks to babies' systems,
and some kids react quickly and violently. They can run an insanely high fever so quickly, and then it'll go down to normal just as fast. Scary stuff.

But, as my good friend, the physician, father of five, once told me, "No one is born allergic. You have to be exposed to something before you have a reaction to it." Same holds for immunizations.

They need the protection, though - without question.

I'm glad your little Jason is doing better. I hope the rest is uneventful..........................

17. Not as bad as the diseases, themselves
Febrile seizures are frightening to parents, but not as dangerous as other seizures can be in children.

Febrile seizures don't require medication or follow up.

The treatment in the hospital was to rule out other causes for the fever and seizure.

The fact sheet is here: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/febrile_seizures/detail_febrile_seizures.htm

18. You state the obvious,
quite gratuitously. When your kids starts getting warmer and warmer while you're holding her, starts screaming and fidgeting and you realize that child is slipping out of consciousness, you don't really stop to think about the cause of this instant fever - you worry about getting her help.

Thanks anyway for the fact sheet. Having brought little ones through all this in my life, I don't need to read about it. I'll be happy never to bear witness to it again in this lifetime.

My baby will be 6 months next month.

I'm so glad to hear that Jason is feeling better. What a scary situation. Have they narrowed down what vaccine caused the reaction?

32. If your child hasn't been having significant reactions so far, you have less
to worry about.

My niece kept getting higher and higher fevers every time, till they finally stopped giving her the old DPT vaccine. And in my generation, we all had had such strong reactions to the old DPT that our doctor was only giving us half-doses. But most children have very little reaction, no matter how many boosters they get.

21. Since we are on the subject, a quick thought on it
Injecting someone too young to talk and communicate how that makes them feel seems like a bad idea to me.

"Oh, you're new here to earth, let me stick you with a needle and inject something into you that will probably help you but might also hurt you..." that's a helluva welcome to life imho.

22. MY SON USE TO GET FEVORS WHEN HE WOULD GET HIS SHOTS -
WHAT I STARTED DOING WAS GIVING HIM MOTRIN FOR CHILDREN TO HELP THE FEVOR NOT TO SPIKE UP. IT ALSO MADE HIM MORE RELAXED. THOSE SEIZURES SURE SCARES THE HELL OUT OF YOU. MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN HAVE TREMORS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HIS BODY FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW. HE HAS HAD SEVERAL MRI'S AND EEGS AND HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM. YET NOTHING SHOWS UP. THE DOCTOR SAID HE MIGHT BE IN THE 70% THAT MIGHT NOT EVER KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT. WE ARE TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT MEDS TO HELP THE TREMORS STOP. WE HAVEN'T FOUND IT YET. HOPEFULLY, SOONER OR LATER THEY WILL FIND A SOLUTIONS. I PRAY FOR YOUR BABY.

If your son is getting repeated reactions to immunization shots, then you need to be seeing an allergist.

Or at least a second opinion.

24. I remember getting one of my toddler immunizations and going through a living hell.
This would have been about 1972 or 1973, before I started Kindergarten. I was most likely 3 or 4, but may have even been a little younger. All I know is I remember going to this place and getting stuck with a few needles in the arm and whatnot, and it sucked.

That night, my arm was in so much pain I came downstairs from my bed bawling my eyes out. My parents, of course, did nothing but send me back to bed. That arm continued to hurt for a period of days, and on top of that I felt like shit in other ways too. Like my mind was off elsewhere all the time and it was hard to think.

I don't trust this shit any further than I can throw it, and I honestly don't care if I'm wrong.

36. I got called up for a rapid deployment to Iraq in 1991 before the 1st Gulf War.
They gave about 6 shots 3 in each arm. The yellow fever and typhoid shots were miserable. Both arms were incredibly sore for days.

You and your family and grandson are all in my heart tonight.

Coming from you, this information means a lot. In the past, I've been skeptical about some of these types of reports, but when you post something like this, it does worry me a great deal and has a huge amount of credibility. Considering the source, this is troubling news. I'm glad you decided to share it.

My heart goes out to you and Jason, and please keep us posted on your situation!

Kick and Rec.

It's scary as hell. His leg turned into an eggplant, and he screamed and screamed. High fevers, etc. Turned out the "P" part of the DPT shot caused the problem. I hope you get some news on what is causing it Steve.

33. I'm so glad he appears to be out of the woods. When his parents are feeling ready,
you might suggest to them that they ask the doctor to file an "adverse effect report" with the CDC regarding the baby's vaccine reaction. The doctor will know how. It's the only way the CDC can keep track of how safe the vaccines actually are.

I regret that I didn't push harder for my doctor to file such a report when my son had a serious reaction. (He decided that because my son's reaction was atypical, it couldn't be caused by the vaccine. But how will the CDC ever know about serious, unusual reactions if doctors filter the reports out?)
