Why do some of the avatars here state "Avatar Removed Due to Legal Threat From Fox"?
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 05:20 PM by Ignacio Upton
I was looking at different avatars to consider a change (I decided that having the chimp giving the finger is still appropriate) and I noticed that several of them state that the original versions were removed due to legal threats from Fox. If they were accusing DU of copyright infringememt (which is stupid, considering that DU doesn't profit off of showing pictures of Sean Hannity or Homer Simpson) this case doesn't show it. It looks more like Fair Use. Why is it that Murdoch hasn't fired on YouTube yet, or even sent similar takedown notices for their stuff, whereas DU is a somewhat-unknown website? Then again, Fox did try to sue the "Faux News" t-shirt maker for trademark infringement, and also targeted AL Franken for using "Fair and Balanced" in his title.

1. I think it was the Simpsons avatars

Fox said DU couldn't use them.

They want to save them for Stormfront.

(joke)

2. So one tiny picture of Homer or Bart is worth threatening DU over?
I still see people put Simpsons and Family Guy characters on their avatars here (albeit because they donated.) Fox is notorious for abusing copyright law to their advantage. They threatened to sue a guy who was going to put out a documentary that just happened to have less than ten seconds of the Simpsons running in the background on the lounge TV.

4. Tells you that this forum is making a difference
When the noise you are making is loud enough to have people trying to stop you anyway they can, then you know you are make the right kind of noise.

So the avatars were removed, that means we are making a difference, just step it up a notch.

6. Well
If Faux tries to use the DMCA to threaten Skinner again, we can always send emails out to Keith Olbermann. I would love to see him skewer Faux for being desperate to threaten suit against us.

7. They were Simpson's avatars, and FOX threatened with a lawsuit.
Skinner used to have an avatar of Principal Skinner before it happened. Murdoch is a fascist.

8. If Free Republic allowed users to have avatars
Then I seriously doubt that Faux would target them for a dubious copyright suit.
