How can an Obama supporter have a 401k investing in war or war related stocks...
pretend to be anti-war while financially supporting war and war crimes? I'll tell you how, because the perfect "investor" in the U.S. is a psychopathic liar.

3. Actually, 70% of American stock owners are invested in war or war-related stocks
So you're full of crap and stupid to boot.

6. I'm stupid? You bring up an irrelevant point as "proof" that I'm stupid?
That's just fucking dumb.

What does 70% of American stock owners being invested in war or war-related stocks have to do with my intelligence?

8. What are you calling "war or war-related stocks?"
And where do you get the figure of 70%.

10. And "war-related" is a category so broad as to be useless, except to the ludicrously ignorant
The Interstate is a war-related thing.

I hope you - since you seem beholden to utter sanctimonious purity - I hope you don't use the Interstate, buy anything transported on the Interstate, or allow your tax money to go to it.

9. Wow - the sanctimonious bullshit just keeps getting piled on.
How high can you build the pile?

I bet you can build it higher than I ever thought humanly possible, a prediction I make based solely on the utterly ludicrous amount of progress you've already made building it.

You pratting away like a jackass falsely accusing me of things that are untrue doesn't make me stupid, no matter how many times you ignorantly chant it.

16. How is that different from living in a country that has started preemptive wars
and ignores the Geneva Conventions? Your answer is that you don't support those who believe in preemptive war or trash the Geneva Conventions. Not in your name you say.

So an investor can say, not in my name just as you can.

17. Beyond Broad Catagories of Investment
Most people have little to no choice in the individual equities that are part of their 401(k) groups.

This is as silly as saying that one is a war supporter because they bought a microwave that used screws produced by the same screw maker that produces screws for fighter jets.

19. I think that's what he means by "war-related" - the microwave,
the Interstate, probably any technology that came out of the space program, and the public elementary schools that all the Lockheed Martin employees went to...

21. grossly simplistic. and not all obama supporters are anti-war as you imply
fwiw, i am a daytrader as well as an investor, so i have a lot of experience in this area.

most 401k's are mutual fund based. fwiw, i have a 403(b) that is 50% mutual funds and 50% stocks. that's because by law it can only have at most 50% in individual equities (self directed trading). i also have futures accounts, etc.

anyway...

most 401k plans offer a limited # of mutual funds. and funds that are 100% squeaky clean of "war related stocks" are rare.

when you consider how many companies have at least SOME relation to defense/war, it's very difficult to invest intelligently and ignore that many companies.

furthermore, and the most important. obama is NOT anti-war, nor are many of his supporters.

he is correctly, strongly against the IRAQ WAR.

he is NOT anti-war, so it is not hypocritical for a supporter of his to invest in war stocks anyway, even given the above aspects

24. rubbish
the time to be short biased was about 5k dow points ago.

fwiw, i was pretty bearish at dow 12k and did take some heat on shorts (40% short exposure) when dow hit 12k and went all the way to the 14k's, but then the shorts started REALLY reaping benefits

here's my #1 longterm investing rule.

you buy stuff when other people HATE it and sell it when they love it.

people HATE stocks now.

they loved them at dow 12,13,14k.

do the friggign math

this philosophy got me into gold when it was $250 an ounce. my gold fund gave me a 400% return.

all other factors aside, this is not rocket science.

god knows when we will make a longterm bottom, but the smart money is scooping up stuff when it gets thrown out with the bathwater. THAT's the way to make real money in the longterm.

of course there has NEVER been a 20 yr period in US history where simply dollar cost averaging into broad based equities (with no timing whatsoever) has not yielded a decent return. in many cases, an excellent return.

i just find it oh so typical how everybody loves stocks when they are expensive and hates them when they are cheap. which is one of the reasons so many people fail at investing/

25. That's talking about a 20 year period
We may be entering into a 10-year period of moribund growth, though, much like the 1970's.

I what I wrote really rubbish? I agree with much of what you say, though if you get out of stocks before they lose 40% of their value, and get back in later, you're far better off than the person who invested purely for the "long term" and suffered losses, or failed to realize their gains. There's a whole generation of folks who don't think that it's possible for blue chip stocks to become penny stocks, and they are in denial about this whole thing, and are keeping their money in, which is really sad for them. I think they are wrong and will continue to lose value. I the bottom will wind up somewhere around where the Dow was at the end of 1995, which was 5,000.

The smart money didn't think there was anything wrong in the FIRE sector, either, and lots of folks invested in firms whose accounting they failed to understand. Personally, I think that we are in deep, deep doo doo, with more news daily on how deep the doo doo is.

I've never shorted anything in my life: all we have here are our retirement accounts, which we took out of stocks and put into bonds in January of 2008. I've never made 400% on anything, but I did at least not lose 40% since last January, which is a lot better than some of them smart fellas is doing.
