"Mostly Crickets" - Make-Believe Boomlet for "Freedom Tower" Fails
Make-Believe Boomlet for "Freedom Tower" Fails
Posted by Roy Edroso at 1:54 PM, March 27, 2009

The Times notes that the local tabs and Pataki have been bitching about the Port Authority's switch from "Freedom Tower" to "1 World Trade Center," and say "The 'Freedom Tower' Name Roars Back." That's show people who think the Times is liberal! But we notice that even the professional outrage artists of the right-blogosphere haven't caught up with this yet -- surely not as quickly as they rallied to the cause of that poor AIG guy. A couple of nuts do the usual war-whoops -- Protein Wisdom says "New York wants to make nice and be Politically Correct," 4th ST8 says it was changed because Freedom Tower "might offend those who don't like freedom," quotes Orwell, etc. -- but mostly it's crickets. The Bosque mischievously asks "Where's the Outrage?" and wonders why Fox News hasn't raised a ruckus. Why, even Toby Keith is silent. See? They told us if we elected that black Muslim guy we'd go all commie. Weep, eagle, weep!

1. Put up a couple of small office buildings and some housing and shops...
and give the rest over to a park and a skating rink. Of course, that won't happen, but that thing I've seen sketches of is hideous.

I always thought the WTC was ugly. I didn't want to see it fall down that way, but I never thought those two silver boxes added to the NY skyline. Best thing about it was the view from Windows on the World.

That asshole Mitt Romney wanted to name the Tip O'Neill tunnel (which celebrated the legacy of the fine pork brought home by Tipper, himself) the FREEDOM TUNNEL or something like that. The legislature told him to go fuck himself in no uncertain terms. The signage designating the tunnel is quite large, quite shiny, and quite straightforward. The O'Neill Tunnel it is.

2. So where's the billions that Silverman collected...why hasn't he rebuilt the Towers?
I'm guessing that (1) demand for office space in NYC is zilch and (2) it's going to be difficult to get people to want to work at a place that will surely be another target for terrorism.

3. "Freedom tower" sounds like a cross between a 70s band and a feminine hygiene product.
Really, if folks are so worried about "freedom", here's what they should be focusing on:
