Do you know the 1989 eruption of Redoubt was the first to be successfully predicted by volcanologist...
There's alot of talk about today's eruption of Volcano Redoubt, a major cone that is about 100 miles from Anchorage Alaska (which is in the Ash Flume path). Bobby Jindal thought it was a waste of tax-dollars that our President put forth a stimulus package that would spend money on tracking volcanoes, like these mysterious forces of nature are something that never would happen on US Soil :eyes:

And yet, as I was reading about Redoubt in the wikipedia page I came across this lil tidbit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Redoubt_(Alaska)#1989.E2.80.931990

The 1989 eruption is also notable for being the first ever volcanic eruption to be successfully predicted by the method of long-period seismic events developed by Swiss/American volcanologist Bernard Chouet.

So for Jindal, a man who is governor of a state that desperately requires the services of Hurricane experts, to criticize this spending - it just goes to show that this guy is not someone who should hold ANY kind of political office. Just because Volcanos are not a part of the makeup of the states that line the Gulf of Mexico doesn't mean these monstrosities do not affect American soil. The danger of Volcanos are just as great as a Hurricane, many of these active volcanos are near large population centers. The Lava flow can have impact on the area but moreso is the ash spewed from these cones that can travel hundreds of miles creating a breathing hazard for those within its path. By being able to predict eruptions, lives can be saved by preparing them for the impact of eruption.
