Columbus Wonder Bread Bakery To Close In May
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wonder Bread bakery located just north of downtown on North Fourth Street will shut down operations this spring, 10TV News reported on Tuesday.
The media relations firm representing Kansas City-based Interstate Bakeries Corporation -- the parent company of Wonder Bread -- said in a release that the bakery would cease production by May 9.
The company will also close a bakery in Missouri.
The news release said that 232 people are employed at the two locations. The release did not specify how many jobs would be lost in Columbus.
However, last month, about 40 jobs were cut at the bakery because it was not equipped to make a new, all-natural bread line. After the cuts about 70 jobs remained at the bakery, the company said.
IBC said that local developments, including the decline of bread purchases, prompted the latest round of closures.
"While closing bakeries is always a difficult decision to make, it's important that we continue to shape our business to meet the demands of the marketplace. We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our talented employees and their families," said IBC Chief Executive Officer Craig Jung.
