5 human heads discovered in ice chests in central Mexico
Edited on Tue Mar-10-09 08:37 PM by thewiseguy
(CNN) -- Five human heads were found in ice chests on Tuesday under a ficus tree in the central Mexican state of Jalisco, police said.

Police in Jalisco, Mexico, discovered five heads beside a road to Guadalajara on Tuesday morning.

The grisly find appeared to be the latest indication of drug cartels fighting for supremacy in battles that have left thousands dead.

That is some sick stuff.

4. Maybe Chuck Norris is needed more in Mexico !!
All kidding aside, prohibition does not work. These are the tragic results of the "war on drugs" aka the empowerment of criminality.

12. The problem in Mexico is on multiple levels.. all point
back to poverty in some areas.. others point to class envy. The HUGE rise in kidnappings in Mexico and the US border states are greatly overlooked and have nothing to do with legalizing drugs..

13. Unfortunately, there is poverty and class envy in many
areas of Latin America. But drug related violence is higher in Mexico than in other countries that have higher poverty rates. Take the Dominican Republic for example. Yes, there is crime. The poverty is heartbreaking. I regularly have women push their infants at me, begging me to bring it to the US and give it a better life. I am white, so I am "privileged" in their eyes. However, there is not the level of drug related violence there, as there is in Mexico. Mexico's proximity to the US, and the US being its largest customer makes this....

10. And then they'll just keep breaking our fence.
Hell, they're already making makeshift ramps and driving over it.

Cut off the flow of illegal arms to Mexico.

14. Just passed through this town last week.
Very, very strange. As I was passing through the mountains, between 10 and 15 Federal Police trucks blew past me, full of cops and complete with gun turrets on top. Scary shit.

FWIW, Guadalajara has been remarkably quiet in terms of drug violence considering the size of the city and its location in the country.

15. Is Mexico one large warzone?
Or is the violence limited to certain areas? Are there places too dangerous for normal civilian lives?

17. No, it's not one large warzone.
For instance: I spent 7 months there (just returned the other day). I lived mostly in Guadalajara, and honestly, you can walk around clueless to violence. I only occasionally watched the news there and that would be when I would hear about things (just like in the US). When you walk by newsstands, you see the results of narco-violence in very graphic detail...but I never witnessed anything violent the entire time I was there. Guadalajara is a city larger than Houston (I think-or maybe comparable), so of course, weird stuff happens like it would in any large city around the world.
The violence has been targeted to specific areas. What is strange is that it seems to be spreading around. That the heads in this case were found in a very rural area is indeed frightening. Once you leave Guadalajara, on this particular road in question, you are very literally in remote Mexico--the next large city is hours away, that being Zacatecas. Ixtlahuacan del Rio is surrounded by gigantic mountains, with one main, two lane road that snakes through them.

There are certainly places I wouldn't go, and I'm very familiar with Mexico. I changed my plans to cross the border on foot and instead flew home. I wouldn't go to Sinaloa if my life depended on it. I spent some time in Michoacan in the Fall, but that state (where current Mex. President Calderon is from) is becoming increasingly dangerous). But, my mom is going to Playa del Carmen in July, and unless things drastically worsen, I've told her she's safe to go. I go back to Mexico in July as well.

20. No problem-I feel it's my duty.
If I can clear up one person's misconceptions about what goes on in Mexico, I'm happy.
