Here's what I don't get about these bank bailouts

Here's what I don't get about these bank bailouts
If the Banks had their risky mortgages insured by the likes of AIG, why are we bailing them out? Isn't that what insurance is for? We are bailing out the Huge Insurance Giant because they had to pay so much on those bad assets and then we turn around and pay the banks for those same bad assets. It seems like we are paying for those risky loans twice. Can someone explain to me why we are not doing that?
