5. Funny.. most people are employed by places that are not
commonly traded on the market... The market was expecting worse news.. apparently they feel this was a "lower" figure

3. Fewer people on the payroll equals more profits for corporations
That's the logic of it.

Frankly I don't pay attention to the stock market vis-a-vis the health of the economy. The markets are pretty much disconnected from the real world and the real economy anyway, that's part of what got us into this mess.

4. Because that bad news wasn't as bad as was expected
Market goes up.

I'm sorely tempted to by Citigroup (bank) at 1.05 a share. The liberal in me hates the fact that they're part of the reason we are where we are, but with the government determined to just huck money at them until they suck less, I feel like if they recover, I'd just be getting a percentage of my tax dollars back.

8. Woop de do, on its way to 4000 and below
because nothing is going to fix this economy until the customers come back and the only way to bring them back is to make sure they get paid enough to become customers.

10. Go buy something
My son and I now have a running joke...markets down? Go buy a candy bar. I told him buying a house would help more but it's not in his budget. (He already has one mortgaged house, doesn't need another).

12. "Bargain" hunters looking to make money on the swings.
It's all they have left.

I can see the possibility of a short run back into the 8000's sometime this year, followed by a plunge to somewhere below our current level, followed by either a complete collapse or a slow (6-8 year) recovery.

My money is staying on the sidelines for now.
