The Judiciary Committee held a hearing today to consider if some sort of commission should be formed to look into the failures of the Bush era with an eye toward understanding the failures and preventing future occurrences of same. We all knew it was coming.
Leahy dispelled notions of blanket immunity in anything that is coming, he also clearly indicated that there would likely be immunity for low level people. No limit on scope was decided although torture was the primary subject - illegal wiretapping was not excluded. Clearly the release of memos is causing action, with more to come on both fronts.
So far so good. There was no bad news. However one thing seems important to me. There were no Republicans left in the room by the end of the hearing. Specter was there at the beginning, Kyl brayed until close to the end but left early too. Clearly they can't support a commission but it was equally clear that they aren't standing up with any force to block one either.
Hail to the Chief
