Dog that survived truck crash has a ticket home

Zak, the dog, has his ticket home to San Diego, thanks to American Airlines.

The 1-year-old basenji mix has been a guest of the Nebraska Humane Society since Sunday after being rescued from the cab of a semi-trailer truck that crashed on Interstate 80 near L Street, killing the driver Robert J. Shields of Poway, Calif. Shields, 59, died on the way to the hospital.

Zak, who had ridden with Shields since he was eight weeks old, suffered a scratch on his head but otherwise is doing fine, Pam Wiese, a Nebraska Humane Society spokeswoman, said Tuesday.


Zak, a 1-year-old Besenji mix.

Freight will cost about $300 and is being donated by American Airlines, Wiese said. Zak will leave Omaha on Wednesday afternoon.

Donations that were sent to the humane society in Zak’s name will be used to pay for the dog’s shipping crate and a bed. So far, about $500 has been donated.

5. A guy near me has one to warn him of seizures. The dog rides in a basket on his motorcycle.

Besenji's are cool they don't bark.
