Air America wants help........
We Want You!

Air America Media is currently conducting a telephone survey of listeners to Air America, and visitors to Air America.com, in order to determine how we can serve you better. The survey lasts no longer than 15 minutes and will be most helpful in terms of building the future of our shows and internet offerings.

If you'd be interested in helping, please respond with your first name, zip code, and daytime telephone number. Rest assured, this information will not be used for any purpose other than that described above.

And thanks for your help!

Bill Hess
Sr VP / Programming
AIR AMERICA MEDIA

9. Beat me to it, but I think they have unrealistic expectations.
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 08:47 AM by FormerDittoHead
I think that what they have to do is to realize that, as far as I can see in the near to medium term, there isn't going to be a "Liberal Rush Limbaugh" to make a lot of money for them and establish a core audience of a desirable advertising demographic.

The fact is that it took YEARS for Limbaugh to hone his craft on local stations, and it was a matter of great timing that his syndication came along at the same time of the Clearchannel revolution and Clinton administration.

It was a combination of work and luck, and honestly, TALENT. And that's the only thing that's ever going to work for liberal talk in the end.

Talent? That lying blowhard? Yes, he's a lying blowhard, but think about it: if he were to die tomorrow (fingers crossed!), who would take his place? Hannity? O'Reilly? No WAY. Give the devil his due. Some historians wouldn't believe it, but maybe Hitler's Germany would NOT have happened without Hitler, and I think the same thing can be said for Rush. And unlike Michael Moore, I don't believe we can just ignore talk radio. It's a ubiquitous medium and even the White House realizes you can't ignore it.

So, good luck, AAR. You lost me when you dumped Malloy, but I think your big problem now is to lower your expectations. I would start developing a deeper bench. You had Sam Seder and you squandered him over that Lionel guy, who I listened to ONCE. I think you should start a series of shorter shows, perhaps focused on given topics, etc. It's not going to be a simple answer like "talk more about this or that" or "get Whoopie!". Troll the college radio stations and build up some talent.

2. I don't even know what shows they have anymore.
Since they got rid of Sam Seder, Mark Marron, Liz WInstead and Mike Malloy, I only listened to Thom and Rachel. Now that Thom Hartmann and Rachel Maddow are leaving, who do they have left?

5. don't listen to them - can't get anything but mouth-foamers
on regular radio. air america or any other progressive radio station is not available in my area, although if the cloud cover is just right and AM signal gets bounced off at the the right angle - I can pick up a progressive station out of Buffalo - it's a bit heavy on the static, but listenable

and at work I listen to ktlk (streaming) - bill press, stephanie miller, thom hartman and whoever they have on after that. by 5pm (et) - I'm in my car heading home and listen to NPR news

8. I Hope That Survey Comes With A Fiver...
About the only way someone would take all that time to fill out a survey that is probably an attempt to prove to some possible sponsor that the network still has listeners.

11. And yet so many here at DU have expressed a desire to see AAR go under....
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 11:21 AM by LaPera
As Nova M is gone, some people have this competitive bullshit going about AAR as if it's some sort of competition or game with progressive personalities.

How many progressive networks are there that one can be so fucking ridiculously petty as to want to see a national progressive network like AAR fail, as the republicans (Limbaugh) laughing saying, "we told you so" AAR wouldn't make it in the long run, “liberal radio just can't make it, no one listens to liberal radio", while radio stations around the country begin believing it again.

Why do progressive want to eat their own?

Every hear a republican trashing Hannity because they like Limbaugh or Savage more? What's wrong with these stupid "progressive" fucks who want to see a network like AAR fail?

As we watch another (Nova M) go down and trying to pick up the piece under a new name.

We need more liberal voices & networks to fight the huge republican airwave advantage spewing out their lies & hate, not less!

12. I don't get it either
AAR was a lifeline, like DU, when it first came on.

The management made some, um, questionable decisions, that's for sure. But a bunch of dedicated liberals put their hearts and souls and dollars into bringing us at least one voice in the wilderness, with (especially at the time) no guarantee that their investment would ever pay off--they did it because they couldn't let right-wing radio go unchallenged and unanswered... and in return they get a bunch of people who should be on their side saying not "it's far from perfect, but it's great to have it," but "they deserve to fail." It makes me sad.
