Teacher Tells Student to "Go Back to Africa"
If a teacher told a black student to go back to Africa, what would be fair punishment?

The state Department of Education is recommending a one-year suspension of a teaching certificate in just such a case, involving a Pinellas middle school teacher.

According to this administrative complaint, Mark Krieger, a health teacher at Oak Grove Middle, reportedly became angry in September 2006 when a student failed to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Krieger told the student he was in a free country and should respect it, and that if the student didn't he should go back to Africa, the complaint alleges.

1. Yep, like most professions, we have teachers who are assholes.
I can't imagine him getting another job anywhere, no matter what the punishment. Dumbass.

8. Even i am amazed at the venom in those posts
I am beginning to think that while maybe fewer people are extreme racists, those that are are really getting mean and loud. Not as bad as up to the 50s but edging that way.

5. Brings back memories.
A teacher once told me to go to Siberia if I didn't want to say the pledge, though I realize that this case has the added aspect of racial animus.

are frightening. Ugly.

One shit-for-brains wrote "If we can't pledge elegance..."

I shouldn't be this easy to spot morans, but I guess it's nice when they help.

7. If Krieger likes being in a free country so much
why is he trying to take away the freedom not to say the pledge?

Also, someone might want to tell him that it's likely we all came from Africa.

9. I have no doubt the teacher knew what he said when he said it
and no doubt did it for the shock value, figuring the student would not turn him in. Good for the student.

22. Yup, Florida.
And for more on that ever-fascinating state, where, apparently, people slowly have their brains cooked in their heads, goto the following website, every Friday:

Scroll down for their "Florida Friday" posts. They are always the best in what Florida has to offer. It's like being there, without the sweat zits, humidity, fire ants, chronic heat stroke and Repukes.

12. what nonsense
I don't support what the teacher said however I surely don't support what the student did either. I think the teacher should have asked the principle what action he should take if the student did it again. I first would have the principle call the parents. I am sure the parents woldn't of liked what the child did. But know the parents are mad as they have a right to be.

17. Patriotic Americans support freedom of speech for all Americans.
In this case, freedom of speech means he doesn't have to stand or recite the pledge.

Why do you hate the Bill of Rights and the Constitution? Just curious.

20. I'm not sure what you're saying
I understand that you don't support what the student did. According to the story, the student didn't stand during the pledge of allegiance. Are you saying the student should stand silently so as not to be disruptive (everyone else is standing; one person sitting sticks out like a sore thumb)? Or are you saying that the student should stand and recite the pledge like everyone else, regardless of his own feelings on the matter?

You further say the teacher should have gone to the principal, but I'm not sure what for. Would it not be better to ask the student directly?

Further information, if you please.

You're on the wrong fucking site.

Guaranteed.

28. A number of groups do not approve of saying the pledge for various reasons
And no one has the right to force them to do it. The teacher should be suspended at the very least.

In Florida in the 1960s I attended school with a young man who was not allowed to say the pledge, participate in class activities that involved any celebration of a holiday, or study mythology since that was studying "pagan" religions. He was the first Jehovah's Witness I ever knew. The teachers in our school learned to accept his religious objections. That he was black never was part of the equation.

That was in Florida over 40 years ago, so this "problem" of not saying the pledge has been dealt with in this state long ago. The teacher in this case is a racist.

29. Who said the student wasn't actually American?
I'm not American, I don't pledge allegiance to the flag.

In respect to everyone else I'll stand... but actually fully participate and join in? Nope.

The original point was the teacher thought the student should show some respect because he lived in a free country. But being in a free country means that you are free to show disrespect if you want to.

But go back to Africa? Teacher, go back to <where your ancestors came from if you're not Indian American> ... yep just as disgusting but still...

Mark.

18. Some of the comments on there are just stupid.
This is a perfect example of AA in action. Screw what these left wing liberal nut jobs what.

We should be able to say what we want when we want. But no, the liberals have to ruin it for all of use with their "Multicultural" crap.

I'm white, I will always be white, and I will never associate with someone who isn't white.

That sounds pretty racist to me.

"My religion forbids the taking of oaths. I'm a Christian." That would have thrown the teacher.

Gotta believe too many fundies down there for the truth to get out. So let's all go back to Africa and appreciate our mother continent and thank them for saving our asses from extinction twice already!
