8. She has appeared to be declining in the last couple of months.
Just passed out. The neighbors said she must have fell pretty hard because they heard the crash. Happened around noon and I didn't get the police call until 4 when I got off work, new job, great new job. I was feeling so lucky and blessed. When it rains it pours!!!!!!

33. Do you know yet if she has any memory of the event? Do you know when/how it happened?
Don't feel like you have to share if you don't want too, I'm sure she has excellent care but having been there with my own mom and being "in the business" so to speak...... I'm happy to offer whatever I can.

38. Happened in her kitchen when she was fixing herself lunch. She
said she felt weak and passed out when trying to make it to the chair to sit down. The doc is more concerned about the passing out than the fracture. They are checking her carotids for blockage.

42. I would agree that the passing out is more troublesome. Sounds like she is indeed in good hands.
In the case of my own mom, her cardiac regulatory system simply isn't always that predictable anymore, so even though she suffers from very high blood pressure, sometimes the volley of medications she is on combined with the conditions of the day and other factors can send her blood pressure very low. When this happens, she becomes suddenly weak and it exacerbates her stroke injuries.

Thanks for being there for your mom. It's a difficult duty, but you are a better person for it. It sounds like you are doing a really good job.

49. Well today, they shot up her fracture with people cement and they are all primed to
throw her out onto the street! The cement cut the pain factor by about 75%. Truly wonderful treatment for the time being. I guess they have used this treatment for compression fractures for about 10 years. The have her admitted into the "observation" section, which looks like a regular room but all it is, is a shingle hung on the door so medicare can have you dumped onto the street before you get the bed to hot. They still have not diagnosed the passing out, but I'm inclined to go with your speculation on the low blood pressure. I think it bottomed out. She has this really thick blood and has always had low pressure. She is in no shape to be on her own, but doesn't have many other options and I have to work. It is such bullshit! What is a person to do when they are old? Go for a cold walk, but what if you can't walk? Sucks ass in a big way. We must fix healthcare without a doubt. Thanks for caring Maru Kitteh.

She already knows about this place, but she is blind so doesn't get the whole idea of posting, even after explanation, and the idea of cyberspace is something that she really doesn't grasp. 80 years on the planet, and she doesn't feel the need for extra space. :P :grouphug: Thanks emilyg!

Last time it took two emergency rooms before they realized how sick Mom was. I took her to the closest one first but, our Doc doesn't practice there so he couldn't push them to keep her.

Unfortunately, I've had a lot of practice at being the angry advocate and it's ridiculous what we have to do to sometimes just to be heard. I hope they figure it out. Give em hell and thanks for the cyberhug from your "Mom's" Keep us posted.

i've been reading down the thread and i'm glad that "cement" worked and she's feeling better. stay connected with her as much as you possibly can--she needs someone to advocate for her with the docs, hospital & treatment. make sure you talk to who you need to be talking to for her, and that you understand everything.

either way--glad she's in a good room now. i was reading a few more recent posts here--things you're planning to get--i can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned. oh--wait. get her a bell! a little hand bell that she can pick up and ring in case you're in the kitchen or on the other side of the house. we had that for my dad when he was recovering--he'd lounge in his room with the tv and i could always hear the bell if i was in the kitchen and the tv in the living room was on. it came in real handy for him--he didn't have to scream to get my attention.

95. No, I work for one.
:D He's semi-retired now, but he loves little people. :D She has a bell, but she'd have to ring it pretty hard for me to hear her in another part of the city. Going to get her a life alert deal. She had to drag herself to the phone and when she got there she couldn't think of 911 kept dialing 411. :( I'm trying to figure out how to build on another room to my dinky place.

68. It seems that both of us stepped on cracks, huh?
Edited on Sat Feb-28-09 11:42 AM by TahitiNut
My 89-year-old mother got a compression fracture of L2 early last summer and recovered after 6-10 weeks, taking Vicodin, Lidocaine patches, and resting. Then, shortly before Christmas, she was trying to pull out the gate-leg of the drop-leaf table and got a new compression fracture of L4. She didn't improve with the same home treatment, so she went into the hospital on Inauguration Day. We survived a short scare about Multiple Myeloma when the bone marrow biopsy came back negative. She's not a good candidate for kyphoplasty due to the nature and location of the fracture. (Laminectomy is contraindicated by her age and health.) She entered the nursing home for rehab after 2 weeks in the hospital. She came back home Thursday, still in pain but slowly recovering. We'll deal with home care (with visiting nurse, care assistant for showers, and physical therapist) for the rest of her (hopefully more rapid) recovery.

"Step on a crack and break your mother's back." (I probably should've paid more attention to where I was walking.)

:dunce:

80. Oh man... Same spot too! Did we step on the same freak'n crack?
Hope your Momma is daily getting better. Mine has a real good sound in her voice tonight. Much better than earlier in the evening. I'm waiting on a call back after she gets moved to her new room! :woohoo: They didn't try throwing her out today as I was anticipated. They indicated this was the intended course of action last evening. I was already for battle today. Had to work my second job and am exhausted, but was still ready for them. to you and your Momma. And let us stay away from cracks! :D

70. My mom had severe crippling arthritis
and came to live with my wife and me for the last couple of years before she died. She had a lot of pain, but it was good to be together.

I hope your mom gets better soon.

81. I am thinking about how we could do that here. I need to add a room for her somehow. Don't know
how we will afford it, but I am always hopeful. Even at that, I have to work, so I don't know how we would take care of her while I work. Very challenging this.

96. We were fortunate
because I just happened to be looking for a new home at the time that my mom couldn't live alone any more. And my wife could take care of her while I was at work, but when we both had to be out of the house for a few hours she could be by herself for a while.

Good luck to you and your mom.

71. Mom died almost 4 years ago today
She was an incredibly strong woman who developed a somewhat silent cancer that was detected too late. She's up in that somewhere (don't believe in heaven but do believe that our energy is lasting in those who loved us) giving your Mom strength now -- she had tons to spare. Or I inherited some of her strength (and I did, too) and give some of it to you now. Huge hugs & given strength to you and your Mom.

72. May she recover soon, or rather as soon as this is
you need a shoulder, feel free to PM me

By the way, there are some things that you should start doing now, like looking for the assisted living devices she'll need, trust me, when dad fell and broke hip, it fell to me. I think I still have some of those websites on my favs on at least one of the machines

Will look them up

83. We have the toilet thing, I need a walker thing and a shower seat thing, and I think that's about it
I already plan to get them on Monday. We have a left over wheelchair from when she previously broke her hip. I appreciate your offer though. Can you think of anything else I haven't thought about getting? :hi:

and a hand hold?

Oh and the shower head on a hose... (That's still there on shower no way I could take it off)

91. Hand rails for all stairs ... including front and back porch.
Best for stairway, particularly into basement, is handrails on both sides. Get a safety belt like the ones used in physical therapy -- a 2" wide canvas belt that goes around the waist. Use that to assist her (i.e. provide safety, not necessarily lift) in walking or climbing stairs. For the walker, depending on physical therapist's and doctor's requirements, "skis" in lieu of stubs on back legs (or all four if not wheeled) make it easier to slide the walker over rugs like those found in retail venues.

Remove all "trip and fall" hazards ... throw rugs, etc. Consider foam padding on corners of furniture for safety ... depending on her equilibrium and agility. Better to have the cosmetic flaw than a serious injury.

Make sure the chairs she uses have arms and supportive backs ... and don't slide too easily. She should lower and raise herself from the chair with hand on the chair's arms. NO FLOP DOWN ... like most of us do. The PT/OT folks will instruct her. Learn.

94. Thank God she doesn't have any stairs. Little kitchen table needs something non-slip under it,
but have considered the rest. She has a hospital bed and the only chair she really likes has nice arms on it which should work nicely.
