The telemarketing calls will not stop!
We got a new phone number a few months ago and I guess a few other people had it before us. I thought I had pretty much taken care of it when those bill collectors would call. But we're still getting telemarketing calls for credit cards and auto loans. I signed the Do Not Call registry.

We're getting the calls on average one to three times a day. Do we need to change our number again?

7. How is that working? Heard many complaints from people who registered
Would like to hear from people who have done it and how well it really works.

12. Works pretty well with a few exceptions.
political and non-profits can call with no penalty. If they do you can request that they put you on their own Do Not Call list. Then if they call there's an $11,000 fine per call.

I still get a lot of robo calls. They are supposed to give a number in the first part of the recording to have yourself removed but I've yet to hear one.

The other issue is the "previous business relationship" clause that says you can be called by anyone who did business with you in the last year. It sounds like you're getting calls from companies that did business with the previous owner of the phone number. Don't know what you can do about that.

15. hmm, if it doesn't stop the robo calls, I don't see the point
I rather like the political calls. GOP assumes anyone in my area is 'one of them' so I can yak it up and keep them on the line so they can't make as many calls to others. Especially fun on election days when they are making GOTV calls. I love to play old, feeble, confused and full of need for them to cater to so I will 'be sure and get to the polling place'.

2. well, go get 'em!
I think the max fine is $11,000.00 per instance...

Filing a Do Not Call Complaint
#
When can I file a do not call complaint?

If your number has been on the National Do Not Call Registry for at least 31 days and you receive a call from a telemarketer that you believe is covered by the National Do Not Call Registry, you can file a complaint at the registry’s website at www.donotcall.gov or by calling the registry’s toll-free number at 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). To file a complaint, you must know either the name or telephone number of the company that called you, and the date the company called you.
#
How do I file a do not call complaint? What do I need to file a complaint?

You can file your complaint on the registry’s website, www.donotcall.gov, using the File a Complaint page. You must know either the name or the phone number of the company that called you. You also must provide the date that the company called you and your registered phone number. You may provide your name and address, but it’s not required for you to submit a complaint. You also may call the registry’s toll-free number 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) to file a complaint.
#
What happens to my complaint?

Do not call complaints will be entered into the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel system, a secure online database available to more than 1,000 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies. While the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help us investigate the company and could lead to law enforcement action.
#
What if I get a telemarketing call, but can’t get the telemarketer’s name or phone number?

For law enforcement officials to take action on your complaint, they need either the telemarketer’s name or phone number, as well as the date of the call. If you want to report a do not call violation, please get that information.

3. There should be a law that they have to hire real people at least
The robo calls are REALLY annoying. They use services WE pay for for OUR convenience, and they torture us with them. They don't even have the decency to always hire real people. They should at least have a payroll to meet if they want to keep it up!

And I would like some regulation on the scripts. This crap of sounding like some official authority demanding you 'take action to correct this situation RIGHT NOW' really pisses me off. How many of our elder, perhaps slightly confused, senior citizens will fall for that crap without really taking time to think about the call? We have encourage 'law and order' to the point that too many just plain take orders. It is dangerous to consumers and to democracy.

6. There is no greater sign of the decline of our civilazation than the fact that
an automated system calls us and then puts us on hold. I will never, ever wait on hold at the request of a machine.

9. years ago, a pal who worked for Ma Bell told me to use a boswain's pipe to discourage calls
The sharp trill would often break the connection. It surely did the caller no good. Damn robos have no eardrums to split. x(

4. My favorites are the "lower your credit card interest" and the car warranties
I get a call from both of these once a week. I've gotten into discussions with real humans at both these places and they just hang up on you if you tell them to knock this shit off. We've been in the do not call registry for years. I even get the calls on my cell phone. The next time I'm gonna lie to them, give them a phony name and card number and let them struggle with it.

10. I get robocalls
and I imagine most of them are offshore.

The "Do not Call" list was only for US telemarketers. Quite a few of them just packed up and moved offshore.

Good for you if you got rid of the bill collectors. They're hard to shake.

13. US and Canadian telemarketers abuse the others Do Not Call list
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 01:26 PM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
Both the United States and Canada have a Do Not Call list, so telemarketers in the US use the Canadian list and telemarketers in Canada use the US list since it doesn't apply to them in the other country.

So in signing up for the list your really signing up to receive foreign telemarketing calls.

14. My dad was a kind and understanding man.
He would always just say "No, thank you." and hang up immediately. He was polite because he sad he felt sorry for the poor shlubs who had to do this kind of work.

I'm not as sainted. In my meaner minutes I take the call. I spend as much time as possible talking about the weather, the product, the last time I went to the doctor, the price of gasoline, what birds are outside my window. Eventually, they hang up. I have just ruined their momentum, their call ratio, and their day.

I'm working on being a better person, but I often take it out on the wage slave on the other end of the phone when what I really I wish is that I could have the address of the jerk making the real money from this invasion.
