Dig Uncovers Spanish Settlement
Source: WCJB News

Archaeologist Willet Boyer believes a site in Ocklawaha could have been one of the largest of the Spanish missions in Florida.

Based on artifacts found at the site, Boyer says he has found the site of a structure in Spanish style located in what was once the territory of the Acuera Indians.

The discovery has convinced Boyer that Spanish colonization was just as prevalent in North Central Florida as it was in St. Augustine and other areas.

Boyer says the Spanish mission might not have enjoyed the same success that the Spanish had with other tribes. "My goal in this research is to try and find out what made these people respond differently and maintain their culture than the other Timicun Indians in the Spanish southeast," he said.

Boyer is currently working on his Ph.D. At the University of Florida and is looking for volunteers at the site. You can contact Boyer at [email protected].
