1. In April or so
They wanted the kids to get used to living in the White House and their new school before they get a dog.

I think they should get a pair of ferrets, personally. While they aren't long lived, I think they're some of the cutest pets out there, aren't they? I love my pair so much. :)

15. Oh what a great pet for them...but
could you see the damage they (ferrets) could do to the staff of the WH. I could just see hundreds of people searching for a ferret that is curled up sound a sleep somewhere unaware of all the panic it has caused.

18. Haha...
I suppose that is true. And as much as I love ferrets, I suppose it would be bad for ferrets if more of the general public started buying them as pets. The general public is irresponsible enough at it is with canines who require less supervision and attention overall...

for a local rescue. There are enough ferrets left where they can die,are abused, neglected or just given up because of the cost of medical care. Also too many non-ferret shelters have no clue how to care for them.

Edited to add-And now that last sleeping ferret has come crawling out I can go to bed. I must see them all before I can sleep.

I just go by his speech when he said "You have earned the new puppy that is coming with us to the white house"

I thought that meant they would be coming with them to the WH, not coming after they got there.

But I really dont wanna have an argument in a thread about dogs.

waterdog. A protugese waterdog needs large lost of water like a lake (none at the WH) T. Kennedy has one. That dog swims in the ocean.

A dog like mine would be perfect for the girls. Non-shedding, clean, easy going, smart, very lovable and affectionate.

28. Porties aren't big.
They are smaller than Standard Poodles, and smaller than Goldens.

I think of them as being medium-sized, like Vizslas.

If you knew how many wonderful Golden Retrievers are rescued every year, you wouldn't be surprised to hear that there are PWD rescue groups.

I really like that breed, although they are sometimes smarter than their people. :)

They need lots of exercise. They're also some of the sweeter dogs we've ever known.

It was tough to resist smuggling one of them out under our coat the last time we saw their family! ;-)

Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 01:07 AM by earth mom
Those girls waited ALL through the campaign for that dog and now have waited almost FOUR additional months.

That is way too damn long to make those kids wait in the first place.

At this point, it looks and sounds like Obama broke his promise to his kids.

Last but not least, I'm sick to death of politicians breaking promises.

And frankly, I find it very disturbing that you'd add to a pile on of new posters calling President Obama, "Obamaliar" and the next poster making some joke about his tan.

And equating an irresponsible, posssibly mentally ill woman who has eight kids with no job or husband who lives in her parent's two bedroom house, or some know-nothing, do-nothing who trots her kids around on stages and TV interviews to get attention with our new President and a PRIVATE agreement he has with his children in the midst of the biggest transition in their entire lives is RIDICULOUS.

17. We've always timed our dog acquisitions around school breaks
Christmas, Easter, Summer etc. We wanted the puppy (new adult dog) to have the maximum family exposure during the first few critical days of it's life in it's new "pack".

While I live on a farm, and our dogs are out 24/7 if they want to be (most don't choose this and elect to sleep in the house - in my bed! - every night), the Obamas are not living that lifestyle. Their dog is gonna need a LOT Of special TLC in it's training, handling, and socialization.

I don't begrudge this family taking it's time in selecting, and more importantly, timing! the arrival of their new family member to coincide with an optimum time frame for everyone in their family.

It's especially critical that they get this "right". This dog, and the circumstances surrounding it's training, socialization, and longevity, will be endlessly scrutinized.

Frankly, I'm glad they are taking their time. Adopting a dog into your family is like taking on a new family member. It requires sure knowledge of the home, homelife, boundaries, and a family's capacity to care and love. The Obamas are making sure they can get a dog that meets ALL the important criteria.

I applaud their delay.

93. Yep. That's best for the dog and for the family. And they need to take their
time in choosing a pet. Being truly loving toward an animal is to do what is best for that animal, including choosing the one that is right for the family in all sorts of ways from training to temperament and how much care the dog needs. So I'm in full agreement with you.

They've said this numerous times. No broken promises here. Malia and Sasha don't expect to get their puppy for a couple months yet.

They agreed as a family that the responsible thing to do was bring a puppy home in the spring, after they were settled in their new home and when the weather would make house-breaking easier.

Or do you have some source quoting him saying something like that? He has certainly said "after," like in the spring. Where is your source? Apparently some people are willing to appear to believe your assertion, for whatever reason, but since there is a large amount of evidence that Obama said they would NOT get a dog until a few months later, I am curious about what led you to say what you did.

,,,I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. but describe the physics of it appropriately each time.

49. Geesh nothing. You're not fooling anyone with half a brain with this thread
but then again we might be of a higher intellect than you are used to dealing with.

Go check YouTube for Obama's first presser as President-Elect.....he said they would be getting a dog in the spring.

And frankly, posting about this shit is ridiculous. Are they allowed any privacy as a family?

He may have said that after his acceptance speech.

Here is a link to his speech. Read his comments about the dog hal way down the page.

35. the dog withdrew himself from consideration
http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977592730

WASHINGTON, D.C. The dog selected by the Obama family as White House pet today withdrew its name from consideration, citing disagreement over the role it would play in shaping domestic policy and the First Lady's preference for dry vs. wet dog food.

"I am today regretfully withdrawing my name from consideration as First Dog," said Splish, the Portuguese water dog selected by Obama's daughters. "The First Lady tried to give me a bowl of Iams Large Breed low fat, low calorie food, and I told her I'd rather chew the paper bag it came in than eat that sawdust-flavored crap."

43. In my experience, it's better to get a puppy in the spring than in the winter.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 12:56 AM by B o d i
Just think of the potty training, as one example. I suppose it doesn't matter as much in warmer areas, but when its below zero and there's a foot of snow on the ground, potty training is extra hard.

Oh, and I think Bodi would make a great name for Malia and Sasha's new puppy. It's an acronym for "Barack Obama, Democrat, Illinois" as well as being an abbreviation of the word Bodhisattva which is a Buddhist word meaning "enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others."

69. The paragraph you're so upset about is this one? Are you serious?
"I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure."

Learn to parse. Getting a new puppy anytime during his term would fulfill that, he doesn't need it day one.

Sheesh.

The argument here was what Obama said and not said during his acceptance speech on November 4th. I was accused of fabricating his statement and the promise he made to his girls. I posted a link.

However, if you believe this was a promise to the American people I guess you would feel betrayed.
