The Thing I Like Best About People Starting Threads Thanking "Whoever" For Hearts....

There have been a couple of whiner threads bitching about how juvenile giving out hearts is. I may have responded as BiB commonly does, or I may have ignored them. Doesn't matter - such threads are by FAR the minority.

What's overwhelmingly more common are threads of the form "I'm not a well-known DUer, but somebody gave me a heart - it's feels good that someone would have noticed lil ol me!".

I know that there are DUers who have been specifically aiming to dole out hearts to the heartless. While we all give out some hearts to those we know & like, in a large number of cases these DUers were giving out hearts to people they didn't know especially well, or even at all. And they were encouraged in this behavior by the various thank-you threads, within which a poster tells about how good she/he felt upon signing in and finding a heart, or how shitty they've been feeling, and a heart helped cheer them up - or whatever.

The thanks proffered by the newly-hearted are unnecessary and beside the point - what's nice to see about people making thank-you threads is that the hearts received are *appreciated*. Knowing that the gesture is appreciated encourages more heart-giving behavior, perpetuating the (very good) cycle.

So I encourage the newly-hearted to keep the acknowledgment-threads coming. Not because you owe anyone any thanks - the hearts were given freely with no expectation of anything in return. Instead, keep such threads coming so that everyone can appreciate their value to you, thus spurring more such behavior towards others.

10. i know that I'm not well known around here

and I'm pretty new (last spring I think) but I got given these hearts and boy, they came at a great time, as I've been struggling with a sudden loss.

the hearts may seem small, but they're not -- to know someone cared enough to include you feels good:-)

I hope the people who gave them to me will see this and know that they did something really sweet and it mattered!

I agree with your OP wholeheartedly.

The hearts are nice and I know mine cheered me up after a rough week. And aren't they much more festive than the old little hearts?

You click on a well-loved DUer's thread and get happy just seeing all the cool DU conversation hearts. Whoever thought up the new hearts did a good thing.

I kinda liked it when I had no hearts...I felt like I had pissed off enough people that people knew who I was but hated me so they didn't give me hearts. Stupidly, I pointed out that I had no hearts, and all of a sudden my fellow DUers took pity on my non-important ass and I got four hearts.
