Toronto Sun: "More Gore-bull from the Goracle". Read this Gore attack piece and then fight back...

By RACHEL MARSDEN

NEW YORK -- Former U.S. Vice-President Al "The Goracle" Gore crash landed in Washington, DC, last week and spewed more hot air on the Gore-bull warming issue at a congressional hearing.

The Goracle said "the planet has a fever." He continued: "If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor. If the doctor says you need to intervene here, you don't say, 'Well, I read a science fiction novel that told me it's not a problem.' If the crib's on fire, you don't speculate that the baby is flame retardant. You take action." He said all of this with a straight face -- albeit barely.

So, ramped up rhetoric is what passes for a solid argument at an environmental hearing on Capitol Hill? If so, here's my submission, for the purposes of a Gore cross-examination: "Al Gore could really pollute a bathroom. I'm talking some really serious damage. Just look at the guy. If someone doesn't take away his pork 'n' beans, he's bound to get another one of these 'gut feelings' and mistake his own greenhouse gas production for science."

snip

Gore said: "The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere up here on Capitol Hill is already 383 parts per million." Wow.
I bet he doesn't even keep track of his daily caloric intake that closely.
If only Gore would impose the same tight restrictions on his diet as he'd like to do with greenhouse gases.

But it would require a lot more effort to drop a few pounds and go around promoting a national fitness program -- even though obesity will no doubt kill more people than Gore-bull warming ever will.

http://www.torontosun.com/Comment/2007/03/25/3828577-sun.html

The Toronto Sun is part of the Sun Media chain in Canada. They run daily newspapers in Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton that all mimic each other in content and and share the same editorials and op/eds. Unfortunately they are widely read by working class Canucks due to the tabloid format.

All Sun Media papers have taken a very strong global warming skeptic stance. Op-eds show up every second or third day denouncing Gore or David Suzuki or the IPCC or propping up the denial peddlers like Tim Ball et al. The editor of the Calgary Sun does all the exclusive interviews of our rightwing Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and the soft-balls she feeds him are despicable.

I encourage you to write a polite LTTE to the Toronto sun at this email: [email protected]

Some suggestions for your letter:

Let them know what you think of their irresponsible partisan treatment of the serious issue of global warming.

Tell them that as an American you are insulted to see their columnists engaging in such anti-Americanism (that's what they accuse all Liberals of!) with mean-spirited insults towards your last VP. Tell them Gore is respected in the USA, and that it's only rightwing nuts who still deny global warming and attack Gore because of it.

Keep it under 200 words.

This may seem unimportant, but we are 30,000,000+ people to your North and the denial lobby is using Canada as part of it's scheme to affect the political climate in the USA.

1. It's the SUN fer God's sake.
the only people who buy it are ogling the Sunshine girl, looking at the weather graphics and reading (some of them, anyway) about the latest Leafs loss.

3. No, many more read it than that. All that's necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do
nothing. - Edmond Burke (and the quote might be a bit off)

I know many people read the Sun, because I find myself answering middle-class grandma's asking me about some BS they read from Licia Corbella (google her, if you dare) or Lorrie Goldstein or Tom Brodbeck.

Sun Media is on an anti-Gore Global-Warming-isn't-real tear, and they need to be smacked down. Nobody is better equiped for a Sun smackdown than Americans, because they hold themselves up as pro-American (pro-Bush is the truth though) and chastise all others as anti-American.

Running hit-piece after hit-piece on Al Gore, as they have done for the last several weeks, deserves some condemnation.

2. The Toronto Sun is a right wing rag
The articles are about 3 paragraphs long and the rest consists of advertisements for prostitutes and sex shops. Typical of a conservative paper in Canada. (They don't have a very long attention span and are obsessed with sex)

4. And the swiftboat liars were rightwing...er....liars. So John Kerry did the right thing by ignoring
their attacks?

The Toronto Sun is part of a media chain that has adopted, regardless of city, this same attack on Gore and anyone else who believes in human-caused global warming. The trash the UN and accuse all scientists who agree with the UN position of being money-grubbing liars.

A Bully won't stop until challanged.

The good news is you and I can read the Sun content for free online. The bullshit is freely available for reading and response.

5. The interesting thing about it
is its attempt to characterize "environmentalism" (I put it in quotation marks because using that term seems to be an attempt to marginalize anyone concerned about the planet, which by now is most of us) as the "new Communism." Look for this canard to make the rounds, quacking feebly and flapping its wings in an effort to look effective.

Otherwise I concur with Mr. Atchung J. Circus - it's the fishwrap cageliner pooptrainer Sun, whom nobody but the whimsical or brain damaged take seriously.

No, not true at all. I have no idea what the J stands for or how I so badly mangled the spelling of your first name.

7. Anyone not taking this seriously is kidding themselves....
Sun Media does help shape public opinion.

People laugh about the paper and it's "Sunshine girl" and excessive ads, but it is still widely read because it's easy to read. To discount it and ignore it and let it do it's malicious work in a 1/2 dozen Canadian cities is to allow a false message to go unchallanged.

8. Not untrue.
And I may indeed write them a letter, even though I'm not American and (if it's anything like the Winnipeg Sun) they answer every dissenting view with a sad attempt at ridicule.

I guess I'll have to wait a couple of days for my chance to be publically humiliated (though I am American, which leads me to believe they might not include the comments I sent in).

22. Oh, they'll just call you a cuckoo or something.
Not too humiliating, especially considering the source.

'Dawn of the Dead' - great movie, and more relevant every day. I might amend Peter's quote to "When there's no more room in hell, the Bush Administration will rule again." Brr! Now that's scary.

21. lol. Yes, their habit of inserting a sniping reply to LTTE is indicitive
of their absolute lack of integrity.

However, the important part is stating what you believe. Published or not, it's valid.

14. You're thinking of Pat Marsden...
who was a beloved Toronto sports figure and broadcaster. There's no relation between Pat Marsden and Rachel Marsden. Pally would have had no use for Rachel Marsden.

11. My Response:
This is truly one of the most amazing hit pieces I have seen in recent memory. That you could rely so heavily on personal attacks (including the utterly irrelevant comparison of environmentalism to communism) shows that you have little scientific basis for your statements on Global Warming. With the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, the backing of such organizations (to clarify, I am American) as the National Academy of Sciences, the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union, and recent information from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, any serious skepticism about human induced climate change is simply ridiculous. And yet people like Ms. Marsden continue to deny it. Why? I cannot explain that. I can only say that to deny the validity of Global Warming is the height of foolishness, and I hope that this paper will not continue with such attacks in the future.

25. Don't go there!
He didn't claim to invent the internet.

He didn't claim to have discovered Love Canal.

And is not now claiming to have discovered global warming!

I'm not really chastising you, just pointing out that the source of the "Goracle" slight is the rightwing tact of accusing him of false claims. They disdainfully call him a "prophet" now, or attribute all global warming concern to him.

26. I'm saying he was right on Iraq BEFORE most other people
He was right on the abuses of the Constitution BEFORE most other people.

Al Gore should take the label of Goracle and OWN it.

He's entitled.

But I get your point about why they are using it...
