30 Jan 2009 // It’s rare that Republicans would find themselves on the same side of an issue with billionaire George Soros, who has spent millions backing Democratic candidates.
But the three Republican members of the Federal Election Commission voted late last year against allowing a lawsuit against Soros to proceed, according to new documents released by the agency.
The three Democrats on the commission voted in favor of it, but the 3-3 tie broke Soros free of any possible FEC lawsuit for allegedly failing to disclose $272,000 spent in 2004 on a mailing list he used to help promote his own book in opposition to President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.
“This was an instance in which it was far from clear that Mr. Soros had any reporting obligations under the law,” said Steven R. Ross, an attorney representing Soros, who noted that the campaign expenditure reports Soros did file with the FEC could “be viewed as overly inclusive.
