'Hi My Name Is Kujo. I Am a Nice Dog.'

Abandoned Pup With Child's Note in Collar Looking for a Home

By JONANN BRADY
Jan. 29, 2009

SHARE When Cecilia Miller's 11-year-old grandson, Michael, found a freezing puppy in the backyard on one of the coldest nights of the year, she called her neighbor, lifelong dog lover Wanda Martin.

Two women came to Kujo's rescue after his owner abandoned him on a cold night. When Martin, 79, arrived, the emaciated dog was curled up outside the basement window of Miller's Alliance, Ohio, home, but he refused to come inside.

"I took a pillow and a comforter and put it in the dirt and the next day took cheese out of my pocket and gave it to him. From then on, we were buddies," Martin told reporter Tracy Carloss from ABC News' Cleveland affiliate.

It took a little while for the dog to warm up to her, but when Martin was finally able to pet him, she found a note written in a child's scrawl tucked in the mutt's collar. The note, punctuated by a smiley face, read, "Hi, my name is Kujo. I am a nice dog. My owner can't feed me. Please help me. I'm great with kids too."

According to Miller, the note was right on.

3. People are heartless...
this is how I "adopted" my pup. Someone abandoned her in my neighborhood during the coldest week of the year, her nose was all frostbitten and she was living off of food from garbage cans.

4. I feel terrible for the kid who had to write that note
I sure hope he/she sees the story on TV and knows the dog will be cared for.

5. We took in another animal a few weeks ago.
A cat. He just came running up to us one day. He was clearly somebody's pet, but no one ever claimed him. I wonder if he had a similar story.

9. Shame on that girls parents.. You don't abandon a puppy with a note in its collar
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 07:01 PM by SoCalDem
You sit down with the kid and explain that you cannot afford to keep the puppy, and then you do the responsible thing.. You take the puppy to the animal shelter..perhaps with the note...but you do not just "set it free" or "turn it loose", or "dump it", and then tell the girl that "someone willl care for her puppy"..

That's the height of irresponsibility.

It's true that the puppy might have been euthanized at the shelter, but it also might have been hit by a car, died of starvation, frozen to death, been killed by a larger dog, .....so many possibilities.

If you cannot afford to keep a pet you at LEAST owe it an opportunity to live somewhere else.

Petsmart has weekly adoptions, people leave animals at our animal shelter all the time. There ARE options..

Shame on these people for laying it all on their little kid.. She would have lived her entire life wondering if anyone ever found her puppy, or if he died.. (if this story ends up being true...)

10. How do you know it's a she?
That's a cute pic of the cats. Guess the litte kitten is ready to pounce! I had a grey cat once and my crappy landlord stole her and set her out in a neighborhood about 2 miles away. She was a wild cat and looked like my neighbor's cat who had just died. When the landlord came around again he thought my cat had come back. I found out about this sometime after it happened when I met another neighbor in the laundry room. So when I asked the landlord about it he said he didn't know I had a grey cat even though I had her for quite a few years. Karma's a bitch you know because not long after that he was selling the place and wanted to evict us (we had rent control) but we went to court and the court gave us quite a lot of money to move. He was so angry but what the hey, karma's a bitch. And I never saw my cat again.

12. Food banks carry pet food as well.
Just so people know, the food banks get donations of pet food too. Stories like this make me miserable.

15. That's good to know. People should have to give up their animals due to lack of pet food.

16. I hope the kid who wrote that note felt like she/he was writing to Santa Claus
(not that the kid necessarily was Christian or celebrated Christmas... I mean I hope that she/he had that spirit of trust)

Ms. Miller's grandson saw a beautiful thing and learned a beautiful lesson about compassion, the child who wrote that note did a beautiful thing and I hope will somehow find out that good people stepped in to help, and Kujo will certainly find a loving home. This is a very sad story, but I'm so happy that it will have a good ending.
