Bailout Recipients Hosted Call To Defeat Key Labor Bill

January 27, 2009 01:10 PM

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community's top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call -- including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG -- were urged to persuade their clients to send "large contributions" to groups working against the Employee Free Trade Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

Bernie Marcus, the charismatic co-founder of Home Depot, led the call along with Rick Berman, an aggressive EFCA opponent and founder of the Center for Union Facts. Over the course of an hour, the two framed the legislation as an existential threat to American capitalism, or worse.

"This is the demise of a civilization," said Marcus. "This is how a civilization disappears. I am sitting here as an elder statesman and I'm watching this happen and I don't believe it."

1. I used to sho at Home Depot
until they did something horrid during the campaign. I don't even remember what it was now. My husband and I drive out of our way to go to Lowe's now.

Thanks for the reminder re their politics, as I almost forgot about them.

This is an outrage. Our tax money saving companies so they can lobby to screw us?

corp free riegn to destroy us as a people and labor laws with being a civilization.
Kill them all*the corporations that is, charge their officers with RICO.
I only shop at Home Depot when I have to.
I have written to them and told them that they allow their CEO to donate to Fascist organizations(bushco) So I will spend my home improvement money on a home state business Lowes, the are NC based. I do what I can to make sure we spend what little we have at places that support good causes. I buy from Target more often than at wallywoild. I can't always but I do try.
When Levis Hanes and Wrangler pulled out of NC I wrote to them all and said I would no longer buy their clothes since they took food out of the mouths of our local labor families, when they said they have to pay shareholders. I wrote back saying that they must not care about the employees that made them great corporations. I have not bought levis wrangers or hanes since,,and I am running out of clothes.
Someone on another thread pointed out Pointer jeans they are in Bristol Tn, and there is Carhart who I believe is American made too.

5. I think Carhart is safe
I've never heard of Pointer.

As for these people claiming they are doing this for the shareholders, I say: BS. No one seems to care about their shareholders anymore, that's why all of our retirement accounts are in the crapper.

Where can one shop???
