It just occurred to me- I can apply for A LIBRARY CARD now!!!
Gonna go down this morning and do just that! For the last eight years with Bush, Cheney, Gonzo and Yoo in charge I had been reticent about getting one since library records were being tracked. My refusal was not out of fear of being caught- "What do you have to be scared for?"- that old meme the ditto-monkeys would spew automatically when abuse of our civil liberties was brought up. No, my refusal was out of principle. How could I ever trust a government that didn't trust me?

What should be the first book I check out? I was thinking either "Do It!" by Jerry Rubin, "Steal This Book" by Abbie or maybe- just maybe- "My Pet Goat"...

Oh, I just LOVE the fact that the public library system is Free For All and plan on taking full advantage of it, now!

1. And librarians are some of the bravest people in the country
They make a lot of stands against censorship and for privacy.

I have some research to do and I was going to head to the bookstore and then I decided on the libary becasue it felt "right". Weird.

I've been watching Tice on Olberman. Don't feel that surveillance has eased even a little yet.

6. Time To Shitcan The "No Fly" List...
The travel industry is down 20% from a year ago...airline traffic is down as well. A reason? Besides many of us don't have the extra coin to travel now like we once did...but also how air travel had become such a big hassle. Hopefully President Obama will take a real close look at how repressive flying has become and get rid of both the "black list" (that never nabbed a single "terrirst") as well as the draconian TSA interrogators and silly "regulations" of taking off shoes and almost stripping naked to get on a plane flight that is usually overbooked and never on time.

Next...time for the fascist sounding "homeland security" to go as well...

8. The trouble is that the surveillance state hasn't been dismantled
And according to both Maddow and Olberman, it isn't in the cards. Sounds like we'll still be living in a security state, just a "kinder, gentler" one:eyes:

13. You not getting a library card
really wasn't justified. Library computers were designed so that once a book was returned, no record was kept of what any individual card holder had checked out.

On the other hand, presumable you purchased many books over the past eight years, so writers everywhere thank you.

16. I recently questioned my library about retrieving a record of what I have read/borrowed
.
.
.

The answer, in writing, came as such

"you wanted to have a list of books that you have read from the library. i just wanted to let you know that we don't have that feature in our system. the only thing that we are able to do is check a specific book to see if you've read it. we just scan one book at a time and it will give us a list of people who have already read it."

SO

They CAN get a list of who read a certain book/publication

and this is a wee town in Northern Ontario, Canada

something to ponder

hmmmm? :freak:

17. I never stopped using mine, or checking out books that the smirking creep and his
Sturmabteilung wouldn't like. That was my big "Fuck you!" to the whole, hate-filled, functionally illiterate group of thugs. Who have, thankfully, departed the American public stage for good.

21. Kudos for your "Big Fuck You"! Highly commendable.
My BFY's were my DU bumper sticker and one with the George Orwell quote "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act".

Thinking about it now- i guess i DID give BushCo too much power over my life.

Can i have those eight years back, please?!?

22. Nope. Those eight years are gone. But here's to eight years of an Obama Presidency
and a solid move toward peace and world brotherhood. Oh, and increased literacy on a global scale! B-) :toast:

19. Has Obama repealed the Patriot Acts?
Do you think he will?

If not, I don't see what is different. The ability to spy on people through library records was approved by Congress. Many of them Democrats.

23. I wanted to be among the first they came for because of what I read. You have
to have some pride about your exercise of freedom. And I strongly agree that librarians have been among the very strongest defenders of our liberties. They have been heroes in defending out right to read -- to know. That is the first bulwark against tyranny.
