Priest's prayer on floor of KS state house criticizes abortion

A Catholic priest from Topeka didn’t mince words in his prayer that opened the Kansas House of Representatives at 11 a.m. today.




Here’s what Father Brian Schieber had to say:

"Gracious Father you created us in your own image and likeness and said of each and every one of us that we are very, very good.

On this 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade, we remember the over 53 million beautiful, innocent unborn children who have been legally exterminated in our land.

Forgive us Lord for the times that we have not raised our voices in defense of those who have no voice.

Lord may this injustice move us to action. May we no longer stand by idel. Give us the virtue of fortitude to enact just laws that will respect the unalienable rights that you our creator have endowed, the first of these being the right to life.

By your grace, guide us to transform this culture of death into a culture of life and a civilization of love. May we here in the heartland of America have hearts on fire for life and liberty and love. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen"




Some lawmakers who support abortion rights were a little perturbed. Typically, the guest preachers who kick off the day's activities in the House try to stay away from overtly political items.



House Minority Leader Paul Davis, a Lawrence Democrat, said he heard complaints about the prayer. He said he talked to House Speaker Mike O'Neal about the need to remind guest ministers tho skip the touchy stuff.



"There were folks upset on both sides of the aisle," Davis said. "We do not want guest chaplains to delve into controversial political issues."

5. Here's an idea... Keep church and state separate like it says in the Constitution

Stop having public prayers. They don't convince us that politicians, as a whole, are any better as people than the rest of us so you're not fooling anyone. If you really believed in what your particular branch of Christianity is (and I say Christianity because any other religion getting to do something like this is rare) then a private prayer is going to be just as good if not better than a big production.
